Cottage Pie needs a low tannin Red wine with little or no oak influence. For chilli-dishes select a ripe, lush wine like a Zinfandel to stand up to the spiciness of the dish. Red Burgundy is the traditional match for Beef Bourguignon, Merlot dominated blends from both Australia and Bordeaux.
A light Pinot Noir, like from Anderson Valley, might also work. Steer clear of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. On the white side, try Pinot Gris (or Pinot Grigio), Riesling, or Gewurztraminer. Alternatively, most Spanish or Italian whites will also work.

Shepherd's pie, cottage pie, or Hachis Parmentier is a ground meat pie with a crust or topping of mashed potato of English origin. The pie is sometimes also gratineed with grated cheese to create a layer of melted cheese on top.
The name "cottage pie" was first used at the end of the 18th century. If it is made with lamb it is usually called "shepherd's pie" (because a shepherd looks after sheep). According to the Oxford Companion to Food, once upon a time, Scotland made its shepherd's pies with pastry instead of mashed potatoes.
All three are much the same thing but in the first two, the meats vary; in a shepherd's pie, the meat is lamb (there is a clue in the name) yet in a cottage pie it is beef. A Cumberland pie can be either meat.
