Cedar trees are considered a fire hazard due to the natural oils they contain, which is highly flammable. The cedar tree's natural oils combined with the large surface area of the leaves makes cedar trees highly combustible, especially under low humidity conditions.

Western red cedar lumber is one of the strongest and most stable softwoods on the market. It doesn't twist, turn or bow nearly as much as other softwoods, making it great for building projects that require both stability and a level of precision. The reason for Western red cedar's strength lies in its core.
Water-resistant WoodsWhile all woods respond to water, some species last a little longer in wet and damp environments. Even cedar, which is considered very water resistant, will warp in moist areas if not properly treated.
Even though they're softer, cypress, cedar, yellow pine, spruce or any other weather-resistant wood is better for exterior decking than maple or oak. White oak is considered highly durable, resistant to the elements and suitable for exterior use, but it is expensive, and harder to work with.
Cost. While cedar wood is less expensive than some similar lumbers, such as redwood, it is still incredibly costly. As the University of Minnesota mentions, it costs on average about twice as much as pressure treated lumbers, such as yellow pine and fir.
Cedar is a safe and very effective medicine, but its medicine will soon become poison if this one simple rule is avoided. Cedar contains Thujone which is toxic to the human body in large doses. Cedar is not however toxic when applied externally, and cedar oil is a wonderful bug repellent!
