Dragonflies don't usually come near people like that, so it was definitely a strange behavior. However, the dragonflies weren't leaving after they landed and would remain attached to his shirt. And they'd stay for a long time, becoming lethargic enough for him to actually pick them up and move them with his hands.
The short answer is yes. Keep in mind, though, that dragonflies don't have a stinger, so they won't sting you. Dragonflies aren't an aggressive insect, but they can bite out of self-defense when they feel threatened. The bite isn't dangerous, and in most cases, it won't break human skin.
Dragonflies are natural predators for mosquitoes. In fact, they eat them at all stages of life. An individual dragonfly can eat hundreds of mosquitoes each day. Adult dragonflies will travel several miles from a body of water.
In some cultures, dragonflies represent good luck or prosperity. So make a wish when you see a dragonfly and it'll come true. Plenty of dragonflies meant there were plenty of fish around. If a dragonfly hovered near the fisherman, he took it as a good luck sign.
Underwater, aquatic plants, grasses and roots provide excellent cover to sleep among. On the land, dragonflies will sleep tucked away in buses or under leaves, or sometimes more out in plain sight, if they feel sufficiently camouflaged. Dragonflies do sleep.
What is the reason behind a dragonfly dipping its tail in the water? She's laying eggs. Dragonflies lay eggs in water, or on plants that grow in the water. They will hatch into nymphs, which will eventually metamorphosize into adult dragonflies and leave the water.
When they land, the female curls her abdomen under to meet his secondary genitalia, forming a “mating wheel” that can resemble the shape of a heart. (Sometimes they will mate in the air.) Mating takes just a few seconds, after which the female can immediately lay her eggs.
Dragonflies represent life transformation better than any other creature on earth. Interestingly, depending upon the time and culture, the dragonfly has been associated with good as well as evil.
The bee represents the wise use of nature, not just the exploitation of it, and the wise application of industry and intelligence by a community.
Further, the Native Americans perceived dragonflies as the “souls of the dead” so a dragonfly visitation around a loved one's death could well signify the loved one's soul taking form in the spirit of dragonfly. It offers the assurance their soul is free.
How to Attract Dragonflies to Your Garden
- Focus on Water. You don't need a large pond to attract dragonflies.
- Add Water Plants. Dragonflies breed in water because their young, called nymphs, need hiding places.
- Edge Your Pond with More Plants. The ideal placement for plants is along the edge of your pond, as they offer more perching sites for dragonflies.
The Japanese consider red dragonflies to be “very sacred,” offering a symbol of courage, strength and happiness. American Indians believe red dragonflies can “bring a time of rejuvenation after a long period of trials and hardship.”
Damselflies are insects of the suborder Zygoptera in the order Odonata.
How long does a dragonfly live?
Damselflies have wings that are both the same size and shape, which taper where they attach to the body. Dragonflies, however, have different shaped fore and hind wings. Their hind wings are much broader and don't taper so much where they attach to the body, giving them more of a plane look.
The dragon is a symbol of evil, in both the chivalric and Christian traditions. In the Orient, it symbolizes supernatural power, wisdom, strength, and hidden knowledge. In most traditions, it is the embodiment of chaos and untamed nature.
"They are considered beneficial to humans. "Dragonflies are predators in the insect world and feed on many small-to-medium-sized bugs, eating things like mosquitoes, flies, moths and midges. Dragonflies eat their own weight, or even more, in harmful insects on a daily basis."
Male dragonflies are very territorial and will ferociously defend their little mating area from other males. During battles, they will grab and bite each other's wings and head, inflicting potentially fatal wounds. Females visit the males' territories along ponds, rivers and streams, and mate with the best fighters.
Not many insects are active in the winter, but the nymphs of dragonflies, mayflies and stoneflies live in waters of ponds and streams, often beneath ice. They feed actively and grow all winter to emerge as adults in early spring. Overwintering as Eggs. Lesser numbers of insects lay eggs which survive the winter.
“Dragonfly swarms are big groups of dragonflies that are typically feeding on little prey insects,” says Goforth, head of citizen science at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. These swarms are so large they're showing up on weather radars, which Goforth says isn't unusual for these clusters of creatures.
Dragonflies fly at speeds reaching 30 mph. They strafe ponds, grasses and bushes in rapid twists and turns to snap up mosquitoes and other flying insects and chew them to bits in their powerful mandibles.
Mosquito Predators – what eats mosquitoes?
- Bats.
- Birds.
- Fish. Goldfish, guppies, bass, bluegill and catfish prey on mosquito larvae.
- Frogs and Tadpoles. Most adult frogs and tadpoles do not include mosquitoes as a large part of their diet.
- Turtles.
- Dragonflies.
- Damselflies.
- Predacious mosquitoes.
Does your fogging hurt beneficial insects? These droplets are so small that one drop can kill a mosquito, but does not have a fatal effect on larger insects like dragonflies, butterflies or moths.
They do not harm living bees, however. In some locations, dragonfly adults may be numerous and their feeding on bees extensive. Only the large dragonfly species are involved since most eat insects smaller than honey bees.
Dragonflies breathe through spiracles (holes) in the abdomen. During their earlier, larval, stage, the insects live in water and breathe through gills.
SCHILDER: Yes, these are likely (pre)migratory swarms or possibly feeding swarms. This species was observed in swarms around where we live (State College). Most dragonfly species will mate and produce eggs or larvae in the summer, which then will overwinter until the next spring.
Killing Specimens
- Freezing and heating. As discussed in sections on jars and bags, and CO2, freezing is a preferred method of killing insect specimens.
- Killing jar. Usually in field work, insects are collected into a killing jar.
- Papered specimens.
- Alcohol.
- Boiling larvae and KAAD.
- Freeze drying.
In-flight, females deposit eggs along the surface of the water. Dragonflies spend most of their lives as drab aquatic nymphs – some species live for five years underwater before shedding their skin and becoming winged-adults.
While they usually eat mosquitoes and midges, they'll also eat butterflies, moths, bees, flies and even other dragonflies. Larger dragonflies will eat their own body weight in insect prey every day. They are extremely agile and catch their prey midair.
Dragonflies are in the Order Odonata. Dragonflies don't have true teeth but they do have extremely large, strong mandibles with sharply-pointed tooth-like serrations.
Dragonflies are full of surprises. They have six legs, but most can't walk. Their giant, 30,000-lens eyes can detect ultraviolet light. And though they lack the brain architecture normally required for a sense of smell, a new study finds that dragonflies may use odors to hunt prey.
