You should donate your first fossil rather than sell it to one of Animal Crossing New Horizons' Nooks. Whenever you get a brand new fossil that you haven't dug up before, it's best to donate to Blather so you can add to the Museum (which is by far the best building in the game).
The only side-effect if you re-bury fossils is that you won't get new ones. Some people use that to their advantage to stop new ones from showing up so they don't have to go looking for them (or for other more devious purposes).
Unfortunately, while the value of a rare stamp is really only what someone is willing to pay for it, the rarest natural history objects, such as fossils, are also the ones with the greatest scientific value. This fossil has scientific value to me, but not a commercial value because it is common.
When sold at Nooks Cranny, a complete collection of fossils is worth 261,600 Bells.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, four to five fossils can be dug up each day. The fossils that appear are random, and there is no way to guess which will appear.
One-piece fossils can be found in both rooms. When all fossils have been donated to the Museum, Blathers will remark, "Hoo hootie HOOOOOOO!
After having Blathers assess the fossils, players can head to the shop to sell the fossils for quite a few bells, depending on the fossil. Some fossils will rack up more bells, such as the T-Rex skull, while other, more common fossils will give players a small boost that could help complete infrastructure construction.
You probally just haven't unlocked donating yet. When he's ready to accept donations, Tom Nook will tell you about how he has a friend (Blathers) who might be interested in building a museum. He'll then start accepting donations.
One easy way to check which fossils you've already found and likely donated is to make use of the Nook Shopping feature! Head to the Nook Stop terminal at Resident Services, or the Nook Shopping app on your NookPhone if you've unlocked it, and select the icon showing wallpapers and flooring.
To view your Fossil list, select the 'wallpaper, flooring, and more' section then use your right trigger to tab over to the Fossils page. You can't reorder Fossils, but you can view an alphabetical list of all the ones you've collected so far.
How to earn infinite Bells in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Save your rarest bugs and fish: The most valuable Animal Crossing fish and insects
- Wasp — 2,500 → 3,750.
- Mahi-mahi — 6,000 → 9,000.

You should always donate the first on any fish to the Museum. The same goes for fossils, bugs and paintings. Money is really easy to come by in Animal Crossing.
1. Give Tom Nook five fish or bugs as soon as possible. On your first 'full' day on the island, Tom Nook will give you a DIY crafting lesson, and during which he'll give you the recipes for the net and fishing rod. Now, that might feel like an unusual comment for Nook, but don't dismiss it.
They will be useful after some time.
- Don't sell DIY recipes which you don't know yet - just learn them. Don't waste a recipe or blueprint just for a few coins.
- Don't sell fossils. Give one unit of each fossil to the museum.
- Do not get rid of unnecessary furniture, wallpapers or floors.
Sell them! Unlike many other things in this game, shells don't have much purpose beyond their value. Grabbing them from the beach is a great way to make some Bells early in the game when you don't have all the tools you need to get the more valuable items.
Animal Crossing money making: How to get bells fast in New Horizons
- Purchase Bell Vouchers with your Nook Miles. For 500 Nook Miles each, one of these vouchers will give you 3000 Bells.
- Play the stalk market.
- Sell the 'Hot Item' of the day at Nook's Cranny.
After you donate a set amount of items (20 or 40 inc one of each type - fish, bug, art, fossil) Blathers will ask you to expand the museum as a public works project. This also unlocks a small shop selling silver tools as well as four large rooms you can rent to use how you want.
Items that can't be ordered through the catalog are ones that will never appear in Nook's shop. Craftables, items received from special NPCs like Gulliver, fossils, etc.
To complete Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Museum on Switch, you'll need to donate one of each fossil piece. From there, you can either decide to sell your fossils, donate them, or keep them for yourself. If you're missing a fossil, consider starting a trade group with your friends.
If you have spare fossils left over, you can either display them on your island for a decent boost to your island rating (we have a page on how to get 5 stars, here). Or you can sell them to Timmy and Tommy at Nook's Cranny for a decent wodge of cash.
Anything that's Placed and not Dropped will be considered furniture.
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, there are 67 total fossils, and four fossils tend to spawn each day. Other items such as pitfall seeds may also be buried underground. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, four or five fossils spawn each day on the player's island.
They won't display any big items, not just fossils. They also won't display wall-mounted items (although they may mount clothes that you give them on the wall).
You can find fossils at all sorts of gift shops, rock shops, and nature stores. But here's the hitch: BE CAREFUL! The one-of-a-kind nature of fossils sometimes has a price tag—a BIG price tag!
Currently it is estimated that around 2,100 “good skeletons” have been found, and the number of known species is several hundred (300-500).

The Coprolite is a fossil that first appeared in Animal Crossing: Wild World under the name of "Dino Droppings", then reappeared in Animal Crossing: City Folk as "Coprolite". This is a single-piece fossil and only requires a single section.
