Wesak. This most important Buddhist festival is known as either Vesak, Wesak or Buddha Day, and is celebrated annually on the full moon of the ancient lunar month of Vesakha, which usually falls in May, or in early June. So Buddhists don't usually refer to the Buddha's death but to his passing, into Nibbana or Nirvana.
Vesak is one of the most important Buddhist festivals. It is also known as Wesak or Buddha Day. It is a celebration of Buddha's birthday and, for some Buddhists, marks his enlightenment (when he discovered life's meaning). It is also a time to reflect on his teachings and what it means to be Buddhist.
In the serene setting of the Tam Chuc Pagoda in Ha Nam province we have gathered here for the celebration of the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak with the theme of 'Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies'.
A Buddha is one who has attained Bodhi; and by Bodhi is meant wisdom, an ideal state of intellectual and ethical perfection which can be achieved by man through purely human means. The term Buddha literally means enlightened one, a knower.
About Vesak Day
The Day of Vesak commemorates Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death. In 1999, the UN recognized internationally Vesak Day to acknowledge the contribution that Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, has made for over 2500 years. He died at the age of 80 in 483 BC. He was in his 80's and he died of old age. Is it true that Buddha nearly starved himself to death and saw visions of God?
Vegetarianism in Buddhism
This is interpreted to mean that you do not eat the flesh or meat of any animal, including fish. The Mahayana school still follows the Buddhist teachings strictly and prohibit the eating of any animal flesh. You are not entirely forbidden to eat meat across all Buddhist tradition. The five moral precepts are:
- to refrain from taking life, ie killing any living creature.
- to refrain from taking what is not freely given, ie theft.
- to refrain from misuse of the senses or sexual misconduct, ie overindulgence in sex or committing sexual offences.
- to refrain from wrong speech, ie lying or gossiping.
Most Buddhists in Singapore will only eat vegetarian meals for the day, and some temples will have free vegetarian food such as fried bee hoon and vegetables. Most people often get the misconception that the Laughing Budai (pictured) is Buddha. The Laughing Budai is actually a jolly, Chinese monk.
Buddhism is growing apace in the United States, and an identifiably American Buddhism is emerging. Though the religion born in India has been in the US since the 19th century, the number of adherents rose by 170 percent between 1990 and 2000, according to the American Religious Identity Survey.
In normal times, you would be able to visit any Buddhist temple in Singapore to pray. Temples with more festivity typically include the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, Siong Lim Temple, or the Thian Hock Keng Temple.
Vesak Day / Buddha's Birthday is on the 146th day of 2021.
Buddha lived in India 2,550 years ago. He lived north of the Ganges in central India and a bit of what is now Nepal. He lived to be 79 years old, and taught for over 30 years after his Awakening.
Regardless of the different dates for the celebration of the holy day, Wesak Day is observed by all sects of Buddhist and observances by the devotes on that day include 'bathing' the Buddha, giving to charity, abstaining from meat through the consumption of vegetarian food, meditation and observing the eight percepts.
Many Buddhists visit temples on Vesak to listen to monks give talks and recite ancient verses. Devout Buddhists may spend all day in one or more temples. Some temples display a small statue of Buddha as a baby. The statue is placed in a basin filled with water and decorated with flowers.
Vesak is considered as both a religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated on the day of the full moon in May. This festival marks the birth, enlightenment and passing away into Nirvana of the Lord Buddha. Many religious activities are organized during this period in Sri Lanka.
