No, the first isn't necessary but the first game is great IMO. If you enjoy the first, you'd love the second because it refines the gameplay so much. But I imagine playing the sequel alone would still be fun, but not as much. The sequel refers to the 1st part during the whole game play I think it's pretty clear though.
