Around 1.85 billion people, or 36% of the world's population, lived in extreme poverty. Nearly half the population in developing countries lived on less than $1.25 a day.
We find that price-adjusted poverty is projected to decline from 7.8 percent in the early 1990s to 4.2 percent in 2020, but that wage-adjusted poverty is projected to increase from 7.8 percent to 9.9 percent.

Poverty reduction occurs largely as a result of overall economic growth. Aid and government support in health, education, and infrastructure helps growth by increasing human and physical capital. Poverty alleviation also involves improving the living conditions of people who are already poor.
Children, lone parents, disabled people and people in households in which no one works are more likely to experience poverty, to remain in poverty for longer and to experience deeper poverty, than others.
