The use of genetic engineering, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), is prohibited in organic products. This means an organic farmer can't plant GMO seeds, an organic cow can't eat GMO alfalfa or corn, and an organic soup producer can't use any GMO ingredients.
Dear Customers, Since Bob milled our first whole grain flours back in 1978, providing our customers with safe, top quality, minimally processed foods has been the very foundation of our company. For non-organically grown agriculture, the USDA has approved the use of glyphosate.
Our Gluten Free All Purpose Baking Flour is a versatile gluten free flour blend, without xanthan gum or guar gum. Great for bread and all kinds of gluten free baked goods! Organic foods do not contain any pesticides, fertilizers, solvents, or additives. The slight difference with the organic label is that non-GMO prevents the use of herbicides that contain GMOs, but it does not mean it must be grown organically. They could be grown with conventional, non-organic approaches.
At Bob's Red Mill, we're dedicated to providing organic and natural foods to our customers. Read on to learn about the benefits of switching to organic foods and produce (and find some recipe inspiration along the way).
While there is no genetically modified wheat currently commercialized anywhere in the world, and GMOs are not related to gluten, I appreciate this opportunity to share some resources where you can learn more about gluten and why it is such an important protein in wheat and other crops.
Milwaukie, Oregon, U.S. Bob's Red Mill is a brand of whole-grain foods marketed by employee-owned American company Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods of Milwaukie, Oregon. The company was established in 1978 by Bob and Charlee Moore.
Most commonly found in crops such as soybeans, corn and canola, GMOs are designed to provide a higher nutritional value to food, as well as protect crops against pests. Organic foods, on the other hand, do not contain any pesticides, fertilizers, solvents or additives.
A group of scientists did an extensive review of research on the safety of crops from GMOs over the past 10 years. They found no significant harm directly tied to genetic engineering. And the American Medical Association thinks genetically modified foods are OK.
Most conventional milk comes from cows given supplemental feed from genetically engineered corn and soy. “Non-GMO milk” is shorthand for milk from cows that do not consume such feed — which is also true of organic milk. The farmer looked into buying non-GMO feed, but it would have cost more than twice the usual price.
GMOs are created exclusively in laboratories; there is no way in which they can be created in nature. Who? GM crops are patented – allowing research, propagation and the entire food chain of GM crops to be controlled by a few multinational companies such as Monsanto, Bayer, Syngenta, DuPont and Dow.
Genetically-modified food is often regarded as something you're either for or against, with no real middle ground. After all, very little of our food is truly “natural” and even the most basic crops are the result of some form of human manipulation.
Genetically engineered foods
- More nutritious food.
- Tastier food.
- Disease- and drought-resistant plants that require fewer environmental resources (such as water and fertilizer)
- Less use of pesticides.
- Increased supply of food with reduced cost and longer shelf life.
- Faster growing plants and animals.
One specific concern is the possibility for GMOs to negatively affect human health. This could result from differences in nutritional content, allergic response, or undesired side effects such as toxicity, organ damage, or gene transfer.
'Organic food is the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides; growth regulators and livestock feed additives. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation.
Nearly all soy—about 94 percent of it in the United States—is genetically engineered to be herbicide tolerant (HT). Chemical companies use a type of bacteria that is naturally resistant to herbicides to create these HT crops.
What Foods are Genetically Modified?
- Corn (field & sweet) The GM version of field corn protects the crop against corn rootworms and the Asian corn borer.
- Soybeans.
- Cotton.
- Canola.
- Alfalfa.
- Sugar Beets.
- Papaya.
- Squash.
Why do farmers use GMO crops? Most of the GMO crops grown today were developed to help farmers prevent crop loss. The three most common traits found in GMO crops are: Resistance to insect damage.
Corn is the most commonly grown crop in the United States, and most of it is GMO. Most GMO corn is created to resist insect pests or tolerate herbicides.
Most of the world's soybeans are currently grown in the US, and a very large proportion is genetically modified (GMO). Although GMOs are controversial, research has so far not found them to be harmful to human health ( 1 ). However, if you're worried about it, simply opt for non-GMO, organic tofu brands.
Always look for the Non-GMO Project's recognizable butterfly icon when shopping at your local grocery store. You can get fresh fruits and other crops from your local farmer's market, and not only find GMO-free foods, but support your local economy and community.
Top 10 Worst GMO Foods to Avoid Eating
- Corn One of the most prominent GMO foods, avoiding corn is a no-brainer.

The GMO-free labeled Tropicana, along with the organic Gatorade, are part of PepsiCo's broader efforts in recent years to bolster its “healthier” products portfolio given the pressure on its sodas business.
Trader Joe's Products are sourced from Non-GMO ingredients. Our efforts began in 2001, when we determined that, given a choice, our customers would prefer to eat foods and beverages made without the use of genetically engineered ingredients.
Oats are not a genetically engineered crop. But glyphosate is increasingly being used as a “dessicant” to dry out crops to speed harvesting.
The trace amounts of GMOs aren't the only problem with processed peanut butter. Many contain sugar and a variety of unhealthy oils. Smucker's Natural Creamy Peanut Butter only lists peanuts and salt as the ingredients, but there's still the issue of refined, processed salt — and those potential GMO traces.
Golden rice is a genetically modified, biofortified crop. Biofortification increases the nutritional value in crops. Golden rice is genetically modified in order to produce beta carotene, which is not normally produced in rice.
Extracted from the roots of the cassava plant – a tuber native to Brazil and a global food staple – Ingredion's tapioca starches can meet kosher, halal and vegan requirements and are grain- and gluten-free and are non-GMO.
“The apple is not the first GMO that people would eat, but it's the first one that consumers may value,” she says. But the company also found that many people changed their minds when told that the apples were engineered to silence browning genes, and then tested for safety.
Bayer, BASF, Dow AgroScience, DuPont Pioneer, Monsanto, and Syngenta all sell GMO seed and associated products, including herbicides, as well as a range of non-GMO seed and products supporting agricultural production.
