The Vatican museums are closed Sundays, except for the last Sunday of every month, when they are free. If you do visit the Vatican on a Wednesday when the papal audience is held in Saint Peter's Square, know that Saint Peter's Basilica will be closed until the papal audience is over (around 12-1pm.)
How to skip the line at the Vatican

Buying Direct: To bypass long ticket lines at the Vatican Museums, make reservations before your tour begins. You can purchase a ticket, which includes both the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, up to 60 days in advance. Book your reservation through the Official Vatican Museums Ticket Office.
The tour includes the main sites in the basilica. Very solid information, and we were so glad we took this tour. A guided tour was not my first choice, ( I could not get tickets for the one day we could visit the Vatican). Yes, the tour was well worth the cost.
The best time to visit the Vatican is between May and October (except August) when the most popular galleries in the Museums — the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel — when they're open for limited numbers who pre-book. 8am is the prime time to get there for.
So, do you need a passport to go to Vatican City? In short, no. The Vatican City has no airport and no sea borders, so the only way to enter is from Italy. Peter's Square and you will have left Italy and entered the Vatican.
Vatican Museums hours
The Vatican Museum is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm (final entry at 4pm).Rome is "open" on Sunday, churches and all. If you wander in during mass, be respectful. No one will chase you out. Museums are open, too: It is Monday that can be a problem as many museums close.

Monday closures
The vast majority are open every day from Tuesday to Sunday, but it is always advisable to check in advance. Many shops are also closed on Monday mornings.There is no fee to enter Vatican City. 2020): Closed due to Corona Virus. Roman Colosseum is accessible everyday of the year. Just on January 1 and December 25 is the Colosseum closed.
Here is what you should and should not wear when visiting the Vatican: Avoid any top that is sleeveless: a blouse, a short-sleeved shirt or T-shirt will do just fine; Cropped tops showing off your belly are definitely a bad outfit choice; Wear trousers, jeans, dresses or skirts that are knee-length.

You bet it's worth it, particularly for entry to the Vatican Museum! Your only non renewable resource on a trip is your TIME. So if you want to wasted it and spend 1 to 3 hours in line sometimes in 90+ heat, go ahead do it.
So if you do not book a tour, you will have to wait in both security lines - one at the Vatican Museums, and the other at Saint Peter's basilica. And you'll have to walk between them for your visits.
Free admission: The Vatican Museums are open for free on the last Sunday of every month. Exceptions include Easter Sunday, as well as June 29, December 25, or December 26 if they fall on a Sunday. Free admission to the Vatican Museums is also available on September 27 (World Tourism Day).
Photography - without flash - is permitted in the Vatican Museums; no photography is permitted in the Sistine Chapel. Photography is also permitted in St. Once in the Sistine Chapel people break the rules all the time and take photos.
The Pope does usually not hold general Sunday mass at Saint Peter's Basilica unless it's for a specific holy day (although there are many other priests giving Mass on Sunday there.) Pope Francis does address the crowd in Saint Peter's Square, with the Angelus, every Sunday at noon (when he is in Rome.)

Oh Vatican. He basically stated that there was a loophole towards sleeping in the Vatican. You can observe homeless people do it every night and the trick is to be on the outside of the low Vatican fence, which surrounds St. Peter's Square, but inside the curbs which mark the border between the Vatican City and Italy.

- Book your Vatican Museums tickets online.
- Go early or go late.
- If possible, visit from Tuesday to Friday.
- Visit during the off-season.
- Visit the Museums on a “free” day… but come early.
- Pace yourself.
- Take the secret passageway from the Sistine Chapel straight into the Basilica.
No one "needs" a guided tour to see Rome or Vatican City. Millions of people each year use a guide book with a map (or two), an app (or two), audio guides, etc. to see the sights. And, you do not need a guided tour to “skip the line” at the Colosseum or the Vatican Museums.
