Kauai, in a way, is set apart. It's also the greenest of all the Hawaiian islands, and 97 percent of it is covered by forests or mountain ranges. All Visitors to Kauai MUST Quarantine beginning December 2nd! On November 27th, Governor David Ige announced that starting December 2, 2020, all transpacific and intercounty travelers arriving on Kauai will be subject to the 14-day quarantine regardless of testing.
Kauai, Hawaii's fourth largest island, is separated into five main regions: Lihue, the East Side (Coconut Coast), the North Shore, the South Shore and the West Side. Driving completely around Kaua'i can be accomplished in one day if you're ambitious; the highway forms a semi-circle and takes about two-and-a-half hours to traverse. However, it's best to spread out your time if you really want to soak in all the treasures along the way.
Kauai's name has no particular historical meaning; however, through the legend of Hawaii loa who is thought to have been the Polynesian founder of the Hawaiian island's original inhabitants, “a favorite place around one's neck” is suggested.

As they age, the crust upon which they sit cools and subsides. This, combined with erosion of the islands once active volcanism stops, leads to a shrinking of the islands with age and their eventual submergence below the ocean surface.

There is no passenger ferry service. How do you travel between Kauai and Maui? There is no passenger ferry service.
However, Kauai's incidents of violent crime — which includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — increased 7.5 percent in 2014. While murder for 2013 and 2014 comprised 0.6 percent of the violent crimes reported, robbery increased almost 4 percent from 13.3 percent in 2013 to 31 incidents the following year.

Kaua'i lies approximately 105 miles across the Kaua'i Channel, northwest of O`ahu. The island is nearly circular in shape with a land area encompassing 533 square miles, that is 25 miles long by 33 miles wide at its furthest points.
