Black Mountain College closed in 1957, eight years after Albers left to direct the first design department at Yale. The college suspended classes by court order due to debts; the school was unable to sustain itself financially given the greatly decreased number of students.
After almost 25 years, the school closed for lack of money and students, but its importance and legacy has continued to grow to this day.
Black Mountain's structure resulted from slow geological processes. Around 260 million years ago, a mass of molten rock (magma) slowly solidified deep below the earth's surface, forming a body of hard granite rock. The solid granite core of the mountain now lies beneath the jumbled cover of boulders.
The alternation with the less-resistant mudstones and siltstones gives rise to the stepped landscape which is especially characteristic of the Black Mountains which are seen in eastward views from Pen y Fan.
