With so many homes destroyed, there aren't enough people currently living on the island to rebuild quickly. "Much of the population in Abaco evacuated or were displaced. And now they are largely unable to return because there is no housing," explains David Eisenbaum, with the charity All Hands And Hearts.

ABACO - Government - Details. Abaco, the second largest island in The Bahamas, is best known as a yachtsman's paradise. Abaco and its cays are scattered over 130 square miles of aquamarine water. Its two major islands, Great and Little Abaco, have a myriad of small cays flanking the mainland.
Administratively, the Abaco Islands constitute seven of the 31 Local Government Districts of the Bahamas: Grand Cay, North Abaco, Green Turtle Cay, Central Abaco, South Abaco, Moore's Island, and Hope Town.

Its main village of Hope Town surrounds a protected harbor with a noted red-and-white-striped one-hundred-and-twenty-foot-tall (37-metre) lighthouse built in 1863. Just over a month after Hurricane Dorian slammed into the northern Bahamas, parts of the island nation are still in ruins, thousands of people remain displaced and rebuilding has only just begun.

Dorian rampaged through the Abacos. It spared their island. The neighboring communities of Harbour Island, mainland Eleuthera and Spanish Wells, which are no strangers to hurricanes but were spared Dorian's Category 5 wrath, had spent all morning preparing to welcome them.
Dorian made landfall at Elbow Cay on Great Abaco Island as the most powerful tropical cyclone to ever hit the Bahamas on record. At 12:40 p.m., sustained winds of 185 mph and winds gusting over 200 mph battered the island for what would seem like an eternity.
There are more than 700 islands that make up the Bahamas, and several that are home to the country's best-known resorts are open as normal. The islands that are currently closed due to the storm's impact are Abaco and Grand Bahama.
Luckily for the family, South Andros Island wasn't hit too badly by the storm. However, it did impact their employees, who lived on other parts of the island, including Abaco and Grand Bahama, which were decimated.
