The Tornado is a wooden roller coaster located at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa, near Des Moines. The Tornado made its debut on July 4, 1978, during Adventureland's third full season. It was designed by William Cobb, and built by the Frontier Construction Company.
Space Shot is a type of amusement ride manufactured by S&S - Sansei Technologies. The ride is a drop tower type attraction that uses compressed air to rapidly propel riders up the tower then gently lower them with a series of air-cushioned bounces back to the loading platform.
It features the ride Pirates of the Caribbean and Adventure Isle, a Tom Sawyer Island-like walkthrough spot, with some attractions like Swiss Family Treehouse or Captain Hook's Pirate Ship. There is also a small pleasure beach in this part of Adventureland which is open to swimmers during the summer months.
Being just under 60 metres in height and having a top speed of 72 km an hour means that you'll experience nearly 3.5Gs going up on BATWING Spaceshot! Safety restrictions prohibit guests under 123cm tall from experiencing BATWING Spaceshot.
When the roller coaster reaches the bottom of the first hill the energy the cars has is now converted to KINETIC ENERGY. G-forces give a rider the sense of INCREASED or DECREASED weight.
The running wheels allow the car to move on the track. The side friction wheels prevent the car from derailing in tight curves as a result of centrifugal forces. The up-stop wheels hug the bottom of the rail and ensure that the car does not lift off the track.
The roller coaster reaches a height of 61.6 metres (202 ft) with a maximum speed of 115.1 kilometres per hour (71.5 mph) and has a total track length of 1,400 metres (4,593.2 ft).

Adventureland marks 40 years of thrills. Forty years ago today in the summer of 1974 an odd thing sprung up from a cornfield in eastern Polk County. On that day Des Moines businessman Jack Krantz opened Adventureland Amusement Park, forever changing entertainment in central Iowa.
