In January 2018, Trump imposed tariffs on solar panels and washing machines of 30 to 50 percent. In March 2018 he imposed tariffs on steel (25%) and aluminum (10%) from most countries, which, according to Morgan Stanley, covered an estimated 4.1 percent of U.S. imports.
In 2019, the United States exported 7.1 million metric tons of steel, a 16 percent decrease from 8.5 million metric tons in 2018. U.S. exports represented about 2 percent of all steel exported globally in 2019. The volume of U.S. 2019 steel exports was about 1/10th the size of the world's largest exporter, China.

Nucor ranked as America's largest steel producer. No company produces more steel in the United States than Nucor Corporation, according to rankings published in the May 2008 issue of American Metal Market.
According to data from the World Steel Association, U.S. steel production increased by 5.2% to 7.5 million metric tons in December. Total U.S. steel production in 2019 increased to 88.0 million metric tons from 86.6 million metric tons in 2018, a 1.6% increase.

Steel mills in the Great Lakes region made 711,000 tons of metal the previous week, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute. Most of the steel made in the Great Lakes region is produced around the southern shore of Lake Michigan in Lake and Porter counties.

Turkey ranks 19th in the list of steel importers to the U.S. by volume, comprising 1.1% of all steel bought by the country this year. Between 2018 and 2019, the volume of Turkish steel exports to the states plummeted by 76%, after already falling by 38% from 2017 to 2018.

The United States imported about 3.7 million metric tons of aluminum for consumption in 2019, while apparent consumption of aluminum totaled about 3.4 million metric tons.
