iPhone XR measures in at 150.9 mm tall, 75.7 mm wide, and 8.3 mm thick, which means it's thicker than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, which measure in at 7.7 mm.

The iPhone XS display is significantly better-looking than the iPhone XR. The iPhone XS features a "Super Retina" OLED screen, while the iPhone XR features a "Liquid Crystal" LCD screen. OLED screens, in general, are brighter, show more accurate colors, and can achieve far better contrast than LCD screens.
The iPhone XR and XS are not waterproof. But they are water resistant, and you can take them for a swim without too much concern -- even in salt water. According to Apple, the iPhone XR can survive a dunk up to 1 meter (3 feet) for 30 minutes, meeting the IP67 standard.

When it comes to design, display, and processing power, the choice is clear: go with the iPhone XR. It's the more modern of the two phones and its power as a workhorse can't be beaten by the iPhone 8. However, do keep in mind that while the iPhone XR has a better display, that display also lacks 3D Touch.
