All wages (including superannuation, allowances and fringe benefits) paid to apprentices and trainees are liable for payroll tax. However, you can claim a payroll tax rebate on wages paid to approved apprentices and only new entrant trainees.
An employee can only be paid apprentice pay rates if they have a formal training contract with their employer. The training has to be registered and recognised by a state or territory training authority. These employees do their training through a Registered Training Organisation such as a TAFE.

if you are aged 16 to 18 or 19+ and in your first year of an apprenticeship, you should receive at least the National Minimum Wage for apprentices (£4.15 an hour as at April 2020). Otherwise you are entitled to the National Minimum Wage rate for your age. Many employers pay well over the minimum.

The limit for an average working week is 48 hours, or 40 if you are under 18. You can work more than this in one week but over a 17 week period it must average out to less than this. You'll need to have an industry recognised level 3 qualification for example a level 3 diploma in electrotechnical services. Most people get into this career via an apprenticeship. It normally takes two to four years to become fully qualified. GCSEs grade D or above, including Maths and English, would be an advantage.
As a self-employed person you'll be able to set your own rates. It's important to understand that most self-employed electricians work on a day rate. These can vary quite significantly depending on your specialism or experience, and can range from around £140 per day to £350 per day.
