Hockey players receive their full salary while on IR as all NHL contracts are guaranteed (unlike the NFL for example). The Leafs placed Horton on Long Term Injured Reserve where they will continue to pay his salary until his contract expires after the 2018–19 season.

An NHL-contracted player must be on the roster of the AHL team at the deadline to qualify for the AHL playoffs. This rule does not affect players added to the AHL team via ATO, PTO or AHL contracts, or players recalled from loan to other leagues.

Of the 927 skaters and goaltenders who have played at least one game in the NHL this season, 214, or 23.1 percent, were born in the United States. Those 214 players were born in 28 states and the District of Columbia. Minnesota is first with 46 players, followed by Michigan with 34 and New York with 29.
According to an article by USA Today, 97% of the NHL is white, while the other 3% is made of different ethnicities. Of the 3% of the remaining ethnicities, twenty-six are black.
