The best baits are live nightcrawlers, minnows, and spawn on a #4 hook or smaller. Get some weight above your hook, such as a split shot or an egg sinker (depending on the conditions), to keep your bait in the strike zone. Let it move through the water like an easy target.
The world record for a brown trout (40 pounds, 4 ounces) was set in May 1992 on the Little Red River, 29 miles of which had become suitable trout habitat with the completion of the Greers Ferry Dam in the early 1960s. This record stood until it was surpassed in 2009.
Unlike brook trout, brown trout can grow to considerable size, up to 20 pounds. However, the average size is around 12 to 14 inches.
Brown trout can reach the ripe old age of 20 years. Freshwater forms of brown trout that migrate from lakes into rivers or streams to spawn and known as 'potamodromous'. Grayling and trout occupy subtly different habitat niches and will readily co-exist in the same stretch of river.

A trout that grew to a catchable size in a hatchery will often show signs of wear and tear on its gills, having been reared in concrete runways. A trout that spent its whole life in the wild will mostly have fins that are in pristine condition. The fin rays will be evenly spaced, with no divots.
On average, a 12” rainbow trout in the sampled area was at least four years old, but some fish had attained that length by Age 2 in richer waters.
The closer to the spawning event, the easier it is to distinguish between the male and female trout. Male trout develop a hooked jaw called a kype, which elongates in size. The female, as the eggs grow in the abdomen, becomes more rounded and stout. Different species of trout spawn during different times of the year.
One of best ways to distinguish the sex of a trout is to examine the mouth. Female trout all have a short rounded nose or upper jaw, while male trout have a more elongated snout. Although the mouth of a female trout will grow larger as it ages and increases in size, the mouth will never grow a kype (hooked lower jaw).
In the spring, rainbow and cutthroat
trout begin their annual
spawning process.
How to Identify Redds
- Clean oval patches of small to medium-sized gravel typically 2 to 3 feet wide.
- Gravel is lighter-colored than surrounding gravel.
- Small depressions and mounds in the gravel indicate nest sites and eggs.
Avoid touching them with your bare hand. If you must touch the fish, wet your hand first. Touching a trout with a dry hand removes their protective mucus layer. If it is removed, the fish will contract a fungus and die quickly.
But it's best eaten fresh, within a day or two. The salt will permeate the eggs within a few hours, so you can make it in the afternoon and eat it that evening.
Trout lay their eggs in nests in the river gravels, known as redds. The female (hen) builds the nest, usually between November and January when the water is cold and carrying lots of oxygen, because that is what the eggs need to hatch.
The best lure colors for trout are: white, gold, brown, green, black, silver, pink, orange, yellow and red. As well as any other pattern or color that best matches the trout's forage.
Brown Trout - Possibly the most aggressive of all trout species, brown trout are located in most of our local water. Although the breeding between these different species is considered a problem to many watersheds scattered across the west coast, they are a riot to capture on the fly.
Most trout don't survive past one week of being stockedFirst, some facts during the duration of the study: Biologists implanted 492 trout with radio transmitters (246 rainbow trout and 246 Apache trout). Many of the trout — 60 percent — are no longer alive after one week in the streams.
Yes, if the conditions are right, they can reproduce and spawn over seasons. When all of these conditions are right, and the water temperature and other factors are perfect, stocked trout will reproduce, and keep spawning every year.
Brown trout have eggs that are roughly a 1/4 inch in size and are bright orange like the rest. Imitating these different types of eggs can be very lucrative for fly fisherman. It is also a good idea to carry egg patterns in an off-white or cream color.
How long do you play the fish before landing it? The longer the fight, the more exhausted a fish becomes, and the more lactic acid builds up in its body. This can cause the fish to die some time later, even after you watch it swim away, seemingly no worse for the wear.
Brown trout are carnivorous, bottom feeders and prefer to eat at dusk or night. The young feed on aquatic insects. Food is carried to them by the river or stream current. Most often, brown trout choose spawning sites with gravel bottoms and highly oxygenated water flow.
“Fish do feel pain. It's likely different from what humans feel, but it is still a kind of pain.” At the anatomical level, fish have neurons known as nociceptors, which detect potential harm, such as high temperatures, intense pressure, and caustic chemicals.
Young trout, called fry, use up the food in their egg sacs and swim around in the lake or stream where they were born. They now have to find their own food – mostly tiny organisms called zooplankton. Over the next few years, fry grow up, eating mostly insects and worms.
Aging fish is similar to aging a tree by counting the number of growth rings. However, the age of the fish is determined by counting the number of wide growth rings called annuli.
Brook trout can reproduce around the age of 2. Brown and rainbow trout are mature in 3 to 4 years and lake trout are mature in 6 to 8 years. How long do they live? Brook trout live 3 to 6 years, brown trout live up to 20 years, lake trout live 20 or more years, and rainbow trout live a maximum of about 11 years.
As the water warms, dissolved oxygen begins to dissipate causing trout to feel stressed well before low oxygen reaches lethal levels. It is believed that brown and rainbow trout begin to experience stress when the temperature rises to about 68 degrees. Brook trout are susceptible at slightly lower temperatures.
Rainbow trout spawn earlier in their lives than most other trout species (at roughly two years) and their spawning season occurs in the late spring and early summer as water temperatures rise. Brown trout spawn in the fall, from late September to early November, and are primarily active during the daytime.
Place the entire sealed egg container (which should be full of its own water) into the tank. This allows the eggs to slowly acclimate to their new temperature. After 15-30 minutes (when jar and tank temperature are within 1 degree), gently pour the eggs into the hatching basket.
The flesh of rainbow trout is white, pink or orange. When the meat is cooked, it has a delicate flake and the color pales. Trout feed can contain pigments to produce desired flesh colors.
