It comprises Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga, as well as the Rift Valley Lakes (Edward, George and Albert). Lake Kyoga is, in essence, an extension of the Victoria Nile. It is relatively shallow with numerous estuaries and swamps. Uganda lies almost wholly within the White Nile Drainage Basin flowing to the Mediterranean.

1)Most rift valley lakes have no outlets to drain salt deposits from the lake. 2)Most rift valley lakes experience intense evaporation leading to higher salt concentrations in the lake. 4)Most rivers flowing into the rift valley lakes pass over salty bedrocks, dissolving them into the lakes.

Geologists know that the Rift Valley was formed by violent subterranean forces that tore apart the earth's crust. These forces caused huge chunks of the crust to sink between parallel fault lines and force up molten rock in volcanic eruptions.
If these two rift zones continue they will break apart the crustal plates they are located on and will create new plates. Sea water will flood the rift valleys and they will eventually become seas like the Red Sea.
Eight of these make up the main lakes in the Kenyan Rift Valley. From north to south, the names of these lakes are Lake Turkana, Lake Logipi, Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru, Lake Elmenteita, Lake Naivasha, and Lake Magadi. Of those eight, only Lakes Baringo and Naivasha are fresh water.
The East African Rift Valley (EAR) is a developing divergent plate boundary in East Africa. The Nubian and Somalian plates are also separating from the Arabian plate in the north, thus creating a 'Y' shaped rifting system. These plates intersect in the Afar region of Ethiopia at what is known as a 'triple junction'.
