An unspayed female rabbit might show a bloody discharge from her vulva, or drops of blood after urination, which could be confused with urine.
Female rabbits don't have bleeding periods. 'Being in heat' is the terminology used when a female rabbit is most fertile. This is when your female rabbit can become pregnant if she's been with a male rabbit. If your female rabbit is in heat, there shouldn't be any blood discharge.
Female rabbits in heat
As with male rabbits, female rabbits will reach sexual maturity very soon. The symptoms of a female rabbit in heat are similar to those of a male rabbit. We find they will mark territory with urine, have periods of both restlessness and aggression as well as riding objects for sexual stimulation. My rabbits like being stroked on their forehead and cheeks. They put their head on the ground and close their eyes in contentment. They also love getting a good back scratch around the shoulders. That said, they tend not to like being touched on the ears, neck, feet, stomach or tail.
Even spayed/neutered rabbits can be quite territorial, so this is important. Don't be surprised to see a female rabbit humping a male (or another female)--this behavior is in part a dominance behavior, and sometimes the female is the top bun. Closely supervise this and stop any circling behavior.
The female rabbit (doe) does not come into heat (oestrus) as do other animals. The doe will accept the male (buck) at any time of the year. Does are mature and can breed at 5 to 6 months of age and can continue to have young for 4 years.
Signs to look out for:
- Fast, shallow breathing.
- Hot ears.
- Listlessness.
- Wetness around the nose area.
- Tossing back of head while breathing rapidly from open mouth.
Apply gentle pressure with a finger and thumb on either side of the opening. If the rabbit is female, you will see a slit-like structure, commonly described as a letter I. If the rabbit is male you will see a round structure, which can be described as an O. The opening closest to the tail is the anus.
Spend a lot of time with your rabbits, respecting them and learning to understand their body language. Rabbits have very good memories. They possess what I call orientation memory. Another example of a good rabbit memory is emotional memory.
YES – Rabbits are described as non-ruminant herbivores, which means that while their diet consists of plant matter such as grass, flowers, as well as twigs, they do not have a specialised stomach to digest plant material. Rabbits not only can and do fart, but they need to fart.
At the completion of the mating act, the buck will usually fall over backwards or on his side. Some rabbit raisers allow the buck to mate with the doe twice before returning the doe to her cage. In some cases, it may be necessary to restrain a doe for mating. Do this by holding the doe by the shoulders with one hand.
Ovulation in bunnies is induced by mating and these animals do not have periods since they do not even have an estrous cycle. Now that they do not have periods, there are no rabbit period symptoms you should expect.
Rabbits do not fall into that strange and rare category of animals that change gender. A rabbit born a buck, will be a buck at 6 months, will be a buck at a year. The majority of "sex changed" rabbits are actually the result of rabbits mis-sexed by the breeder. We have rarely made this mistake.
Spaying female rabbits is very important for health reasons. If left unspayed, the risk of uterine cancer is approximately 80% above the age of 5 years old, and this is usually fatal. Some rabbits will continue to display some territorial behaviour; females in general tend to be more "bossy" than males.
Sedentary rabbits, female rabbits, and middle-aged rabbits are all at risk of developing hematuria. This may be due to kidney stones, bacterial bladder infections, and/or an increase of calcium in the blood. The most common cause of hematuria in intact females, however, is the dysfunction of the reproductive tract.
When mating, they will try to get a good grip on their partners. As much as a good grip is required, they may "bite" the female in order to hold on. But biting is not exactly necessary nor is it that uncommon. Yep. Rabbits bite eachother as a show of superiority.
"If you touch a baby the mother will smell the human scent on them and will reject or kill it." This is one of the most common myths we hear and it is absolutly untrue.
The length of pregnancy in the rabbit is 31 days and the doe can produce from 1 to 12 young each time she gives birth. She can become pregnant again within a few days of giving birth. However it is not good practice to allow the doe to become pregnant straight after giving birth.

The calcium is excreted in the urine in the form of calcium carbonate. This substance is what makes normal rabbit urine cloudy in appearance compared to the urine from a human, dog or cat. The calcium carbonate is the white residue seen on the cage paper after the urine is dry.
During warmer seasons, rabbits will eat weeds, grasses, clover, wildflowers, and flower and vegetable plants. When the weather turns cold, rabbits will munch on twigs, buds, bark, conifer needles, and any remaining green plants.
It's possible to keep two pregnant rabbits together, as long as you have enough space. However, mothers should bond with one another before they become pregnant.
It is quite common for first time does of small breeds to lose their litters. Usually the reason is difficulty kindling, but sometimes it's because they're just not experienced and didn't take care of them properly.
How Do I Know My Rabbit Is in Heat & Ready to Breed?
- Determine the age of the rabbit and its breed.
- Pick up the doe with one hand on its scruff and the other hand holding up its bottom.
- Look at its genitals, specifically the vaginal opening.
- Inspect the vaginal opening for signs of moisture.
Excess thirst usually occurs as a result of excess urination, as the body responds to the loss of fluid and attempts to to maintain hydration. The rabbit's plasma fluids become highly concentrated, and this activates the thirst mechanisms. Occasionally, excess urine occurs as the result of excess thirst.
Rabbits generally recover quickly from spay/neuter surgery and often return to their normal behavior in just a few days. Males usually recover from neuter surgery more quickly than females recover from spay surgery. It is important that you wait 30 days after surgery before making an introduction to other rabbits.
The leafy carrot tops are great for rabbits though and they love them! For most animals, eating plants from the nightshade family (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant to name a few) can be toxic and rabbits are no exception. They should not eat the leaves or stems.
Old Age (How Long Do Bunnies Live?)
While some rabbits tend to still be very active at this age, it isn't uncommon to notice your rabbit calming down quite a bit. At this age, rabbits tend to really trust their owners and they like to spend a good amount of time around people.
