A Diploma qualification refers to the number of learning credits a student will study and aim to achieve in a course, but a Diploma can be awarded for any level, i.e. a Level 2 Diploma, Level 3 Diploma and so on.
Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) programmes are the recognised teaching qualification for the post-16 sector. Once achieved, QTLS is equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England, allowing you to work as a qualified teacher in state schools.
The PGCE is not a postgraduate degree, it is instead an advanced but non-degree qualification (as it is directly related to a career, it is considered vocational). PGCEs that do not carry master's credits are now known as Professional Graduate Certificate in Education.

Regulated Qualifications Framework
Learners can progress from the Level 3 Award in Education and Training directly into teaching or a facilitating role in the further education sector. These qualifications can help you to progress in teaching/training and/or support roles in a wide range of organisations in the lifelong learning sector.
A Level 3 qualification is equivalent to A Level. A Level 4 qualification is equivalent to BTEC Professional Diploma level. A Level 5 qualification is equivalent to HND or foundation degree level. A Level 6 qualification is equivalent to Bachelor's Degree level.
If you have a degree you can apply for a PGCE/Diploma in Education and Training in the post compulsory sector. You may not need a degree or to pass skills tests - this depends on your skills and experience, the subject you plan to teach and the route you are taking.
The PGCE PCET is for graduates who want to teach their degree subject or any subject for which they have at least a level 3 qualification in. The PCE PCET is for students with a Level 3 qualification (e.g. NVQ3, OCN 3, A Level equivalence) preferably in the subject they are teaching or want to teach.
Gaining QTLS statusTo gain QTLS status, you must currently be teaching in the post-14 sector (at least two hours per week) and have achieved a relevant teaching qualification to at least level 5 (i.e. the Diploma in Education and Training/DTLLS/Cert Ed/PGCE).
A Bachelor's degree is the most common type of undergraduate degree – and can be studied straight after finishing higher education. It's classed as a level 6 qualification. How long will it last? A Bachelor's degree will usually last three to four years if studied full-time.
Our Accredited Level 4 Diplomas are equivalent to a BTEC HNC qualification. For students currently holding a Level 3 Diploma or A Level qualification, our Level 4 Diploma courses represent an excellent progression route as they are equivalent to Certificates of Higher Education.
A diploma in teaching is a qualification that is usually awarded through a technical or vocational school. This qualification in education usually takes 18 months to acquire while a degree is usually studied over four years. For example a Diploma in Grade R Teaching will allow you to teach Grade R children only.
Level 7 refers to a level of education equivalent to a master's degree, and is generally attained in a centre for further education. Examples of Level 7 qualifications include: Master's degree. Integrated master's degree.
AET is an outcomes-based programme that aims to give you basic learning tools, knowledge and skills, and equip you with nationally-recognised qualifications. Anyone who did not complete mainstream schooling, and want to attain qualifications in a flexible environment, may register with any AET centre.
