As You Like It Synopsis. Duke Senior, banished and usurped by his brother, Duke Frederick, now lives in the Forest of Arden, with his noblemen. Senior's daughter Rosalind has been allowed to remain at court with Frederick's daughter Celia, but she suddenly incurs Frederick's displeasure, and is banished.
Through four acts of the play, Rosalind, who in Shakespeare's day would have been played by a boy, finds it necessary to disguise herself as a boy, whereupon the rustic Phebe, also played by a boy, becomes infatuated with this "Ganymede", a name with homoerotic overtones.
Rosalind leaves with the disguised Celia, and the two soon return as themselves, accompanied by Hymen, the god of marriage. Hymen officiates at the ceremony and marries Rosalind and Orlando, Celia and Oliver, Phoebe and Silvius, and Audrey and Touchstone.
We have a question: Why the heck does she stay in her disguise? For many literary critics, Rosalind stays in her man pants because it offers a special kind of freedom.

Rosalind is not unrealistic, and although she enjoys the wooing side of romantic love, she is aware that it is not necessarily genuine, which is why she tests Orlando's love for her. Romantic love is not enough for Rosalind she needs to know that it is deeper than that.
