Can you drive a car with a broken axle? Without two operational axles, your car won't be going much of anywhere. As one of the most important components on your vehicle, the fluids that keep your differential running can be the, ahem difference between a smooth and safe ride. While each differential varies, fluids should be changed regularly and replaced with new differential fluids recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer.
Simply put, a differential is a system that transmits an engine's torque to the wheels. The differential takes the power from the engine and splits it, allowing the wheels to spin at different speeds. Turn it around a corner and you'll have no issues, as each wheel is able to turn independently from the other.
In this situation, a limited-slip differential prevents excessive power from being allocated to one wheel, and so keeps both wheels in powered rotation, ensuring that the traction will not be limited to the wheel which can handle the minimum amount of power.
Combined with the few hours of labor required for their replacement, the typical rear differential cost of repair is between $200 and $400. If gears are required, that number jumps a bunch. Rear differential repairs that include a new gear set may be $1,500 or even higher between parts and the labor to replace them.
A locking differential is designed to overcome the chief limitation of a standard open differential by essentially "locking" both wheels on an axle together as if on a common shaft. This forces both wheels to turn in unison, regardless of the traction (or lack thereof) available to either wheel individually.

The simplest single-engine steering system in mechanical terms, and almost universally used on early tank designs, was the combination of a brake and a clutch connected to steering controls. However, differentials can fail if they are pushed too hard which means that you have performed numerous burnouts, drag racing, and so on. Also, it is known that differentials can break if the inside gears are made of softer-type steel which is not able to withstand engine power and torque.
Most manufacturers recommend that the differential fluid be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. It is a messy job, and should be done by a licensed mechanic. Plus, because the differential is underneath the car, it will need to be lifted, so this is definitely not a DIY project.

Different types

This condition is typically always diagnosed as a bad ring and Pinion gear. A “howl or whine” during acceleration over a small or large speedrange is usually caused by worn ring and pinion gears or improper gear set up. “Rumbling or whirring” at speeds over 20 mph can be caused by worn carrier bearings.
One of the symptoms that is most commonly associated with bad or failing differential or gear oil is a noisy transmission or differential. If the gear oil runs low, or becomes excessively dirty, it can cause the gears to whine or howl as they turn. They will be able to replace your differential / gear oil if necessary.
Shift into a forward drive gear and let the engine idle. Stay away from moving parts, and listen to the differential – it should be quiet.
But if lubrication in the differential fails, you won't be getting very far for very long. Fortunately, you only need to change this oil every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. ⚠?As always, check your owner's manual for the exact frequency you should service your differential. Every car is different.
