Go to Control Panel, type ease of access in the search box and open Ease of Access Center. Navigate to Make the keyboard easier to use option. Scroll down and select Filter Keys. Uncheck the Turn on Filter Keys option, then hit Apply and OK.
For example, if you choose Escape to the right of the Control (^) Key label, pressing Control has the same results as pressing Esc: it closes menus that are open, and pressing Control-Option-Command makes the Force Quit Applications window appear.
If it did, and your programs don't respond to the key, it's a problem with your computer. If it didn't, then your keyboard has a defective “Escape” key. Access the task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and start closing processes under your username in the “Processes” tab.
Avoiding the Esc keyIf you have an American English keyboard, pressing Ctrl-[ (control plus left square bracket) is equivalent to pressing Esc.
