It requires steam, but there's no online connection needed to play single player. Make sure you go into the steam settings and disable cloud saving though, otherwise you'll get annoying popups every time your connection drops.
No, you can play single player without internet. You probably will need to be connected at least for the initial installation though, lots of stuff it needs to download before hand.
You can play "Borderlands 2" split-screen with a friend sitting beside you on the couch or you can let the game's online matchmaking put you together with strangers. But no matter how you're connecting or who you're playing with, "Be nice," Varnell says. "I think that's a general rule for all of life."
You will need a router or at least a hub, two PS4s, and Borderlands HC on each system.. Connect both systems to the router/hub and start the game. Choose the LAN option in game and wait for the consoles to find each other (one person may need to start the game to "host").
A LAN party is a gathering of people with computers or compatible game consoles, where a local area network (LAN) connection is established between the devices using a router or switch, primarily for the purpose of playing multiplayer video games together.
Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on your router to any port on the switch. This will essentially extend the number of ports on your router, allowing you to connect more Ethernet devices to it. Any computers you connect to the switch will be connected to the router and the internet.
- Connect your lan cable to the ethernet slot provided and to the another laptop of your friend only if you two are playing.
- Connect your lan cable to the ethernet slot provided and to the LAN router if multiple friends are playing.

LAN, or Local Area Network, play specifically refers to computers, or Switches in this case, being connected via Ethernet cable to a router. You can only use this when the Switch is docked. Local wireless play is using the Wi-Fi connection. This can be used docked or handheld.
Connect the first and second laptop by using a crossover Ethernet cable. Attach one end of the cable to the Local Area Network (LAN) port or the Ethernet port of the first computer and connect the other end of the cable to the LAN or Ethernet port of the second computer.
You can play every second of Borderlands 3 with a friend either online, or via couch co-op with a buddy right next to you. You can play with four people online, but local gameplay is limited to two. Once that's done, you can Add Splitscreen from the Play menu.
On PS4 and Xbox One, Borderlands 3 supports split-screen local co-op play for two players. If you're playing on PC, the only option you have for playing in co-op is online. But hey, at least you'll be able to have more friends in on the act.
Gearbox Software President, Randy Pitchford, confirmed that Borderlands 3 will have an offline mode. You don't have to be “always” online in order to play this game. You can play the Borderlands 3 solo or co-op (online and offline split-screen).
It's been quite fun. I do wish your equipment slots were granted more quickly, however. You're hours and hours into the game before you can equip a class mod, relic, or even carry more than two weapons.
In Borderlands 3, level scaling kicks in when you jump into another player's game or they join yours. This time if you are level 20 and your friend is level 30, enemies in both of your games will match the respective player's level. You will see enemies around level 20 and your friend will see enemies around level 30.
If you're looking to add friends in Borderlands 3, so that you can play the game together, head into the same menu as before. In the first 'Roster' screen, you'll be able to see which of your friends are online and playing Borderlands 3. You can then invite them into your squad.
Players can join their friends' lobby by searching for their SHiFT Display Name. Find SHiFT Friend and Manage SHiFT Friend buttons have been added in the game menu as well.
