Clearly, the best way to increase your odds is by switching from a regular throw to a curveball, as it's a flat 2x boost to your capture chance. If you do the same and can land Great Curveballs, that skyrockets to a 77% chance with 7 hits.
If you press and hold B the exact moment the pokeball closes, you're guaranteed to catch the Pokemon. If it doesn't work, you were sightly off in your timing.
Here's what you do: spin the Pokéball in a little circle at the bottom of the screen until it starts to sparkle. Then, throw it off to the side just enough so that it will bank into the Pokémon. Not only do you get a higher chance of catching the Pokémon, you won't get surprised by accidental curves anymore.
Simply go to your backpack and select the Razz Berry. Then, click the Razz Berry on screen to feed to the Pokémon. So long as you implement a successful throw, this should make the Pokémon easier to catch. But if that isn't enough, you may need to upgrade your Poké Balls.
What about an Excellent Curve Throw?
- Touch and hold the Poké Ball until the target circle shrinks down to Excellent size.

Flee rate is used to determine whether a pokemon flees after escaping a ball. People have noticed pokemon fleeing more often when they were moving during the capture, so that might influence flee rate.
Weakening Rare Pokemon with Sleep or Paralysis will help you catch them. What will help even more is using more powerful Poke Balls or specific Poke Balls for the type of Pokemon you are looking to catch.
On your first visit to the Wild Area, you can only catch Pokémon up to level 20. As you get more gym badges, you can catch stronger Pokémon, but there's no point in trying to snag that high-leveled Snorlax early on.
