Calculate How Much Soil You Need
- Convert the inches you need for soil depth into feet. Example: 3" of soil (3" ÷ 12"=.25')
- Multiply the length by the width by the depth of soil needed.
- Divide the cubic feet by 27 (that's the number of cubic feet in one cubic yard).
- Round off your answer to 1.4 cubic yards.

Compacting in Trenches
- Backfill in layers of 4 to 6 inches, using non-organic fill material that is free of debris.
- Compact with a 1,000-pound compactor, or as appropriate.
- Water thoroughly.
Earth filling under floors should be done in layers not more than 6" in thickness. The layer should be compacted properly.
