Governor General was the head of all governors of states under East India Company. After the power shifted in the hands of British Crown, Viceroy was appointed, who was the head of colonial India and governed the territory on behalf of British Crown.
The Governor-General is appointed by the Crown, in practice on the advice of Australian Ministers of the Crown. The Letters Patent provide that the appointment of a person as Governor-General shall be by Commission which must be published in the official gazette of the Commonwealth.
The First Government House Site is associated with many historical figures, both European and Aboriginal. The first nine Governors (Phillip, Hunter, King, Bligh, Macquarie, Brisbane, Darling, Bourke and Gipps) all lived in the building.
Article 155 says that “The Governor of a State shall be appointed by the President by. warrant under his hand and seal”. Article 156 provides that “The Governor shall hold office during the. pleasure of the President”. The term of the Governor is prescribed as five years.
