Tazarotene is in a class of medications called retinoids. It works to treat acne and psoriasis by slowing skin cell overgrowth and decreasing skin cell inflammation, which can lead to acne or psoriasis.

Tazorac isn't approved to treat pitted acne scars. But using the Tazorac cream or gel to treat your acne may limit scarring by keeping acne blemishes from forming or getting worse. Your doctor may prescribe Tazorac off-label to treat acne scars.
Using fingertips, apply only enough foam to lightly cover the entire affected areas of the face and/or upper trunk with a thin layer; gently massage the foam into the skin until the foam disappears. Avoid the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Wash hands after application. Patients may use moisturizer as needed.
In some cases, the disease can be painful due to inflammatory lesions, and it can also cause scarring and significant emotional distress. In a clinical study, Arazlo was found to have similar treatment success compared to Tazorac® (tazarotene – Allergan) Cream 0.1%, with fewer treatment-related adverse events.
Common side effects may include: dry, scaly, or peeling skin; skin pain, redness or burning; or. itching or other irritation of treated skin.

Some products that may interact with this drug include: vitamin A products, hair perming solutions, other skin products with strong drying effects, skin products containing alcohol/lime/spice (such as shaving lotions, astringents such as calamine lotion, perfume), soaps/shampoos/cleansers that are medicated/abrasive.

According to the most recent FDA Enforcement Report, Allergan recalled 42,359 tubes of Tazorac in 30-g and 100-g sizes because the gel at the 24-month stability test fell slightly below regulatory specifications for product concentration and content uniformity.
Apply a thin film (2 mg/cm²) of TAZORAC® Cream once per day, in the evening, to cover only the psoriatic lesions. If a bath or shower is taken prior to application, the skin should be dry before applying the cream. If emollients are used, they should be applied at least an hour before application of TAZORAC® Cream.
Mix your retinol with your moisturizer, or apply your moisturizer first and then your retinol. Always use sunscreen the morning after you apply retinol.
It's perfectly safe to use a moisturizer with tretinoin. In fact, tretinoin without moisturizer is generally not recommended. Many dermatologists advise their patients to moisturize while using it to reduce their chance of developing dry, peeling skin.
Prescription-strength acne medications such as retinoids (Retin-A, Differin or Tazorac) can help to unclog pores, which makes them look smaller. Tazorac (tazarotene) also comes in a cream or a gel. It is more expensive than tretinoin as it does not yet have a generic option. In studies it is as effective as tretinoin for photoaging and wrinkles.
Retin-A (tretinoin) Cream and Gel and Avage, Fabior, and Tazorac (tazarotene) are retinoids (a form of vitamin A) used to treat acne. Avage, Fabior, and Tazorac are also used to treat plaque psoriasis (psoriasis with scaly patches) and to treat facial acne.
0.05% is seen most often for anti-aging preparations to reduce the appearance of fine lines. 0.1% has the most intense side effects but is often used for severe acne. The increasing strengths generally come with increasing side effects such as: Dryness, Peeling, Itching, and Redness.
Adapalene is a newer drug that's slightly less effective at treating acne than tretinoin. It's sold over the counter and by prescription and tends to be slightly less irritating to the skin than tretinoin, making it worth considering if you have sensitive, easily-irritated facial skin.
Check with your doctor if your condition does not improve within 8 to 12 weeks. If you are using this medicine to treat psoriasis, scaly patches on the skin may begin to improve in about 1 to 4 weeks but redness may take longer to improve.
