'Automatic' is the new default behavior which allows the AirPods to transiently switch between devices. For example, if your AirPods are connected to your iPad, and then you press Play on your iPhone's Music app, the AirPods will connect to the iPhone instead so you can hear the music in your ears.
Why do AirPods automatically switch devices? The auto switching feature is designed to make life easier for AirPods owners. Let's say you listen to music from your iPhone on the way home from work. Once home, you pick up your iPad and use it to watch some YouTube videos.
