Tips from the BBB to protect yourself against this scam:
Use Caller ID to screen calls, and consider not even answering unfamiliar numbers. If it's important, they will leave a message and you can call back. If someone calls and asks “Can you hear me?”, do NOT answer “yes.” Just hang up.One of the most common ways of placing a No Caller ID call is by dialing *67 before a phone number when making a call, as this automatically blocks your caller ID to the call recipient. Because the people they call won't see their caller ID or possess the ability to call them back, they think they won't get caught.
All calls from police stations show on a person's incoming call register as Private Number or No Caller ID. But police warn that all calls made from police telephones indicate Private Number or No Caller ID, rather than the phone number of the police station.
Use *57. One option to try to discover the identity of an unknown caller is a 57 call trace. Though this option does not work on all unknown calls, it does work on some so it's worth trying. To use it simply dial 57 on your phone and you will be given the previous caller's number.
Temporarily block your number
Actually, it's more like *67 (star 67) and it's free. Dial that code before the phone number, and it will temporarily deactivate caller ID. On the receiving end, caller ID will usually display “private number” because it has been blocked.“The simplest way to tell if you have been blocked by an Android user is to call,” Lavelle says. Of course, this doesn't automatically mean that person has blocked your phone number; your call may be diverted to voicemail for other reasons.
In case of an Android Phone, open the Phone > tap on More (or 3-dot icon) > Settings in the drop-down menu. On the pop-up, tap on Hide Number > Cancel to come out of the Caller ID Menu. After hiding Caller ID, make a call to the person that has blocked your number and you should be able to reach the person.
Once blocked, calls from select contacts will not show a notification on the iPhone, but the caller will still have the option of leaving a voicemail. Messages for blocked contacts and numbers will also fail to come through onscreen.
When you block a contact, their texts go nowhere. The person whose number you've blocked won't receive any sign that their message to you was blocked; their text will simply sit there looking as though it were sent and not yet delivered, but in fact, it will be lost to the ether.
If an iMessage, did you block the number, or the Apple ID. If you just added the number, then it may be coming from the Apple ID. If you blocked the contact, make sure it includes the number and caller ID. Apple ID would work for iMessage.
Re: how long does a phone number stay blocked? Phone numbers are only blocked for 90 days. If you go to the "Usage Controls" for your own account, you can see where this limitation is specified.
Usually, you can easily read a blocked message on Android phone after opening the block list. If you mistakenly deleted the blocked message in block list, you have to rely on data recovery for Android unless you have backed up your Android phone before deleting data.
When calling from the blocked number, the caller hears either one ring, or no rings at all, but the other phone remains silent. The caller is then informed that the recipient isn't available, and is diverted to voicemail (if that service is set up by the person you're calling).
However, if a person has blocked you, you won't see either notification. Instead, there will just be a blank space beneath your text. If you've got an Android phone, your best bet is to just send a text and hope you get a response.
