The whole rest of the time, the E is the express train running through Queens to JFK's Airtrain. And it runs every 5 to 8 minutes almost all the time, except in the middle of the night when it runs every 20 minutes.
Not just inside Penn Station, but the surrounding streets? Any info would be useful, thanks! During the day, it's (basically) perfectly fine, as it's a business area. At night, it's still safe, but just use the same precautions you would use in any urban area where you're not familiar with.
Getting There
Penn Station is easily accessible by subway. The 1, 2 and 3 trains will take you directly to the station on the 34th Street stop. The N, Q, R, B, D, F and M trains drop passengers off one avenue east on 34th Street and 6th Avenue, right next to the Macys.Pennsylvania Station was ruined long before it was wrecked. Its demolition is the stuff of New York legend, an act of architectural vandalism so unspeakable that it gave rise to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, saved Grand Central Terminal and upended the city's development priorities.
Penn Station is always open. Penn Station is easily accessible by subway via the 1, 2, and 3 trains to 34th Street and 7th Avenue, which take you directly to the station, or the N, Q, and R or B, D, F, and M trains to 6th Avenue and 34th Street, near Macy's and Herald Square.
The main entrances are on 7th and 8th Avenue and on 34th Street. The entrance to Penn Staion on 7th Ave is where the taxi stand is located. It is too crowded to get picked up on that side of 7th Ave. If you need to be picked up on 7th Ave, my suggestion is to get picked up across the street or South of 31st Street.
Among things to do near Penn Station, this is the one you shouldn't miss!
