AutoCAD Mechanical supports a dedicated command to translate STEP files into the DWG format. Find and select the STEP file you want to import, or enter the name of the STEP file at File Name. Click Open.
Discover how easy it is to
convert a 3D file (
STEP, IGES, STL, SLDPRT, X_T, X_B, SAT, OBJ, BREP) to
DWG or DXF.
Brief summary:
- Open your 3D file.
- Go to File → Save as.
- In the opened window, specify the output file name and file format (AutoCAD DWG or DXF).
- Click Save.
To Export the Current Drawing to an STEP File
- At the Command prompt, enter STEPOUT.
- In the STEPOUT Translation dialog box, in the Files of type box, select IGES (*. stp, *. step).
- In the File Name box, specify the name of the STEP file.
- Click Save.
Select output format:
- ASSBIN. Assimp Binary. .assbin.
- STP. STEP File. .stp.
- 3MF. 3D Manufacturing Format. .3mf.
- PLY. Polygon File Format. .ply.
- X. DirectX 3D Model. .x.
- DAE. COLLADA File. .dae.
- FBX. Autodesk Filmbox File. .fbx.
- GLTF. GL Transmission Format. .gltf.
The STEP 3D file format is a data exchange format applied in the computer aided design (CAD) industry. It is primarily used to transfer real-world mechanical and architecture designs between different CAD software tools.
AutoCAD
- Click Output > Send panel > Export. At the Command prompt, enter export.
- In the Export Data dialog box, enter a file name.
- Under Files of Type, select Lithography (*. stl).
- Select one or more solid objects. All objects must be entirely within the positive XYZ octant of the world coordinate system (WCS).
Open STEP File on Windows OS
- Try double clicking on a STEP file in Windows File Explorer.
- If the STEP file reading software is associated correctly then the file will open.
- If the file did not open you should install Autodesk 3DS Max software.
Note: Downloading the
AutoCAD Plant 3D object enabler will allow the components to display in
AutoCAD.
Solution:
- Open the file that is to be converted.
- In Project Manager, right click on the file.
- Select "Export to AutoCAD."
- Select a destination to save the file.
- Open the file in AutoCAD.

A STEP file is a 3D model file formatted in STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data), an ISO standard exchange format. It contains three-dimensional model data saved in a text format that is recognized by multiple computer-assisted design (CAD) programs. The STEP format was developed to solve that problem.
Export controls are U.S. laws and regulations that regulate and restrict the release of critical technologies, information, and services to foreign nationals, within and outside of the United States, and foreign countries for reasons of foreign policy and national security.

Best STEP File to Use: AP203, AP214, and AP242.
Working with CAD, it's often helpful to translate digital designs into physical models. This can be done by converting your STEP files into 3D printable STLs, which can then be processed and sent to a 3D printer.
Article Details. Generally, AP203 is a "general" STEP format. AP203 defines the geometry, topology, and configuration management data of solid models for mechanical parts and assemblies. AP214 has everything a AP203 file includes, but adds colors, layers, geometric dimensioning and tolerance, and design intent.
