Formatting refers to the appearance or presentation of your essay. Another word for formatting is layout. Most essays contain at least four different kinds of text: headings, ordinary paragraphs, quotations and bibliographic references.

outline font. A scalable font in which the outlines of each character are geometrically defined. An outline font is scalable because, given a geometrical description of a typeface, a printer or other display device can generate the characters at any size (scale).
Turning Fonts to outlines effectively means that the text is no longer text - it has become a graphic, and the text cannot be altered. Converting text to outlines is very easy in Illustrator. The “Green” text in the graphic shown below (left) has a blue line underneath it.
To convert text into a shape, right-click on the text layer, and choose “Convert To Shape”. Then select the Direct Selection tool (the white arrow tool) by pressing Shift A and click-and-drag the points in the path to give the characters a new shape.
Creating an Outline. An outline allows a writer to categorize the main points, to organize the paragraphs into an order that makes sense, and to make sure that each paragraph/idea can be fully developed. Essentially, an outline helps prevent a writer from getting stuck when performing the actual writing of the essay.
For PDF files outlining fonts is not necessary. With the proper PDF job options, fonts are embedded into the PDF as live type. This allows the font to retain it's original hinting data. Outlining type does nothing to prevent data transfer issues.
