How to download free maps for a Garmin GPS: step-by-step instructions

- Step 2: Choose your map type – click “generic routable (new style)”
- Step 3: You have two choices at this point – you can download a pre-defined country or build your own custom map.
North American Map Regions. During a map update, Garmin Express may prompt you to install a map region to your device. You can purchase other region or country maps for your automotive device by visiting Garmin's Online Store.
To install maps to a Garmin device or memory card:
- Connect the Garmin device to the computer.
- Open Basecamp.
- Click Maps > Install Maps.
- Select the device or SD card.

Discontinued Garmin nuvi models
The following, older nuvi models have been discontinued, though many are still available online and are fully supported by Garmin.There is no subscription service required to use a GPS device, although some additional and enhanced services do cost money.
Software Updates via Garmin Connect App. The Garmin Connect App will download software updates automatically behind the scenes while your device is connected to your mobile phone. Generally, any released updates will take up to week to download before automatically or prompting to install on your device.
Garmin releases system software updates periodically. It is recommended to check for updates every 3-4 months to ensure the device has the latest system software. To check for updates on Automotive1 or Outdoor devices: Download and install Garmin Express (Recommended)
