It was one of the first states to outlaw slavery. It is the second smallest state by population (after Wyoming). Ben and Jerry's ice cream began at a gas station in Burlington, Vermont. Vermont is the home of maple syrup.
First proposed by a 5th grade class at the Cornwall Elementary School, the Vermont General Assembly declared the Monarch as the official state butterfly on July 1, 1987.
The origin of the name Maine is unclear. One theory is it was named after the French province of Maine. Another is that it derives from a practical nautical term, "the main" or "Main Land", "Meyne" or "Mainland", which served to distinguish the bulk of the state from its numerous islands.
The state's name comes from two French words vert (green) and mont (mountain), which explains Vermont's nickname, the "Green Mountain State." Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys defended their homeland from the British during the Revolutionary War.
It is not legal to whistle underwater. It is illegal to paint a horse in Vermont. Women must obtain written permission from their husbands to wear false teeth. Doves must not be kept in the freezer.
Vermont is known for foods like Vermont cheddar cheese, maple syrup and the ever-popular Ben and Jerry's ice cream. It is also home to many farms, artisan foods, fresh produce, wineries and breweries.
Vermont's hilly to mountainous landscape is quite forested, giving the state its nickname the Green Mountain State. The highlight of Vermont's landscape is the Green Mountains, the 310 km (190 mi) long mountain range runs along the western edge of the state in a north/south direction; they are part of the Appalachians.
Colonel Davis selected the name "Montpelier" after the French city of Montpellier, capital of the department of Hérault.
The Vermont Republic is a country that existed from 1777 to 1791. It was located on land that was claimed by New York and New Hampshire. It had its own postal system, military, and currency. Even though it had a government, it was not respected by England or the Continental Congress.
This is because Business Insider reports that the capital of each state isn't always the biggest city. Montpelier is the smallest state capital in terms of population (7,500). They also favor local businesses over big, well-known chains. So, it makes sense why they wouldn't have a McDonald's there.
