No area of Nogales is immune from violent crime. However, the area between El Periferico highway and Avenida Obregon is safer than the outlying suburban areas of the city. Travel throughout the city only during daylight hours. Avoid walking after dark in Nogales.
The U.S. State Department has issued severe travel warnings for the Mexican states of Sinaloa and Sonora. Sinaloa is at the highest alert — a Level 4, "do not travel to" warning — and Sonora is now at a Level 3, the second-highest warning. Mexico has seen a jump in the murder rate from this same time last year.

Americans Have Traveled to Mexico Throughout COVID. While the U.S.-Mexico land border is currently restricted to essential travel, air travel between the United States and Mexico is permitted. Technically, there's a ban on nonessential travel across the border through January 21.

The Mexican government may not let U.S. citizens who are driving or walking to Mexico enter the country at land border crossings if they do not have a U.S. passport book or U.S. passport card.
