However, when I opened the box and pulled everything out, the interior pot only showed 6 liters/16 cups. I tested it out by filling up to the 8 cup line, which took 12 cups, so by extrapolation, the interior pot holds 24 cups up to the max line - i.e. 6 quarts.

I have used two at once for meals, and it's handy. But I really like having a smaller pot that can live on the counter. Depending on the size of your family (and your countertops), a 3-qt might be a better fit than another 6-qt.

Recommendation. If you're in the market for an 8-quart pressure cooker, the Instant Pot Duo Crisp would be a really great choice. You get all the capabilities of the classic Instant Pot, plus the great air frying capabilities.
All that makes Instant Pots light years ahead safety-wise of their ancient pressure cooker counterparts. Of course you still need to operate your appliance properly and with care. You can cook so many things in an Instant Pot, from whole chickens to desserts.
