If there is no bowel movement after 5 minutes of using, try to empty bowel. Call a doctor promptly after using a saline enema and no liquid comes out of the rectum after 30 minutes, because dehydration could occur.
Side Effects
- Mild abdominal discomfort/cramps or gas may occur.
- Persistent diarrhea may result in a serious loss of body water (dehydration) and salt/minerals.
Remove the cap from the nozzle of the enema. Gently insert the tip of the nozzle into the anus, and continue inserting it 10 centimeters (3–4 inches) into the rectum. Slowly squeeze the liquid from the container until it is empty, then gently remove the nozzle from the rectum.
If you cannot use the muscles in your lower body to pass stool, you can help the stool come out with a finger. You can also use this method if you have difficulty passing stool (constipation) or have hard stools.
Enemas Are SafeAn incorrectly administered enema can damage tissue in your rectum/colon, cause bowel perforation and, if the device is not sterile, infections. Long-term, regular use of enemas can cause electrolyte imbalances. Temporary side effects of enemas can include bloating and cramping.
Do not use more than 1 enema in any 24-hour period. Each disposable enema is for one use only.
Giving women enemas during labour has been routine practice in delivery wards of many countries and settings. Occasionally women leak from their back passage whilst giving birth and it was thought an enema in early labour would reduce this soiling and the consequent embarrassment for women.
Press the bottle up against your hole and gently squeeze the bottle while relaxing your rectum. You should feel the water slowly filling you up.
The best time to do an enema is right before your normal bowel movement or right after having a bowel movement depending on why you are using the enema.
Quick ways to make yourself poop
- Take a fiber supplement.
- Eat a serving of high-fiber food.
- Drink a glass of water.
- Take a laxative stimulant.
- Take an osmotic.
- Try a lubricant laxative.
- Use a stool softener.
- Try an enema.
It is best not to eat for at least 30 minutes before starting the process. Most enemas will show results within an hour of the injection. After injecting the fluid, the individual should lie on their back and try to hold it in for as long as they can.
Stimulant laxatives are the fastest-acting, such as include aloe, cascara (Nature's Remedy), senna compounds (Ex-Lax, Senokot), bisacodyl (Dulcolax, Correctol), and castor oil. Saline laxatives or enemas such as Fleet Phospho-Soda, milk of magnesia, and magnesium citrate.
Enemas can treat constipation and clear out your bowel. However, many people choose to use enemas for other purported health benefits ( 8 , 9 ). Some advocates claim that enemas can support weight loss, remove toxins and heavy metals from your body, and improve your skin, immunity, blood pressure, and energy levels.
safety rule is: never do more than one enema per day. But an olive oil or mineral oil enema does not stimulate the colon to evacuate poop, so it doesn't “count” as a second enema. It simply softens and lubricates stool so it empties more easily.
