If you're applying as a first-year student, we require two letters of recommendation: one from a high school counselor and one from a teacher. While we'll accept a third recommendation from a teacher or other recommender, we require our committees to consider only two recommendations in the decision-making process.

Click your grade level to see our evaluation. If you have a 4.0 as a freshman, you're off to a great start. A 4.0 GPA means that you should have a very good chance of acceptance at most colleges as long as you had challenging coursework.

To put it bluntly, yes, colleges do look at freshman year grades on your college application. However, if a student doesn't receive her best grades during her first year of high school, all is not lost. Both school systems only request marks received after the conclusion of ninth grade.
UCs do look at courses you take in freshman and senior years; the grades and rigor of your coursework are considered in context of your overall curriculum. But freshman and senior year grades are NOT included in the GPA calculation.

UC has a specific way to calculate the grade point average (GPA) it requires for admission. California applicants must earn at least a 3.0 GPA and nonresidents must earn a minimum 3.4 GPA in all A-G or college-preparatory courses to meet this requirement.
As a student at New York University, your class grades and grade point average make up a large part of your academic record and are determined according to university grading policies. You can check your midterm and final grades on NYU Albert each term you're enrolled after your instructor submits them to our office.
Weighted 10-12 A-G GPA: This is the GPA that will be used by the UC/CSU system. This GPA includes a student's grades from 10th and 11th grade in A-G approved courses. To determine if your course is an A-G approved course, you can go to UC Doorways to determine UC eligibility.
UC also looks at the difficulty of the classes you took. They're specifically looking for honors, AP, or IB courses since these are more difficult than regular-level classes.
