The HEVI-Shot HEVI-Choke is offered in both mid-range and extended range sizes. For turkey hunting, you'll likely want an extended range choke. HEVI-Shot does not recommend ammunition for the extended range chokes with excessive speeds of 1550 fps, like the kind you might use for upland birds.
The inside bore constriction at the muzzle end of a shotgun's barrel is known as the "choke." When a shotshell is fired, shot travels down the bore, exits the muzzle, and begins to spread out. For instance, a full choke is most effective at 40 to 50 yards. An improved cylinder is most effective from 20 to 35 yards.
Turkey shotguns tend towards shorter barrels because the muzzle movement through the arc when bringing it to bear is less noticeable. Wave a 30" barrelled scattergun and then one with an 18" barrel if you doubt this. For wingshooting, most folks shoot most shots better with longer barrels.
A
choke is simply a tapered
constriction of the gun barrel's bore at the muzzle end. The exit end of the
choke is smaller by some dimension than the actual bore of the barrel.

Modified – Sitting at the middle of the pack, modified choke tubes are a good general choke size to use when not sure whether shots will be close or far. Their ideal pattern is found at 30 to 40 yards.
These are our recommendations for the best turkey chokes for the Remington 870:
- Carlsons - Long Beard Turkey Choke Tube.
- Primos TightWad Turkey Choke.
- Primos 69405 Jelly Head Mag Lure.
Full - The full choke offers the tightest constriction to a shotgun. It can hold the shot pattern the longest. Because of this, this type of choke is the ideal choice when hunting turkey and squirrels. Specifically, you have to use this choke when you are shooting targets that are within the 40 to 45-yard range.
At the shooting range, the patterns thrown by most full-choked 3 1/2-inch chambered 12- or 10-gauge shotguns might make 35 yards seem conservative as the greatest distance at which to shoot a turkey.
You can shoot buckshot out of any choke. I usually like to use #1 buckshot instead of #00 buckshot because you have more pellets and they pattern a lot better from my guns. I prefer the full choke barrel but every gun is different so I'd try different chokes until I got what I wanted.
Buckshot, depending on the manufacturer of the choke, is usually best with a full to modified choke. Turkey tubes are usually a little tighter than full. They can make buckshot tighten too much and produce exaggerated patterns or worst create too much pressure near the choke.
A higher notch count means less constriction. 1 notch = Full. 2 notches = Improved modified. 3 notches = Modified. 4 notches = Improved cylinder.
A standard full choke with standard lead slugs is safe. Don't matter if they are fixed chokes or interchangeable tubes. You probably won't get good accuracy. The new sabot slugs or solid copper, really anything but lead, should probably not be used in full choke guns.
Avoid using full lead chokes with steel shot because the constriction is too tight. For ducks and geese that are close, improved cylinder or even skeet constriction choke work well. If the birds are farther out, a modified choke tube is better.
Shotgun Choke Markings
The specific choke you use determines the range and accuracy of the shot. Many choke models available have identification markings on the rim of each choke tube. That way the gun owner will know what type of choke is installed in the barrel without having to take it out.Turkey guns are a contradiction: They're shotguns we shoot like rifles. But turkey guns as we know them today feature several common traits: a short barrel; a tight choke; the ability to shoot heavy loads; sling swivels; and a matte or camo finish to hide them from sharp, suspicious eyes.
cylinder choke would be your best bet, but slugs will work through a modified choke, it is only a little more constriction, and will cut down your shooting distance a bit.
A rule of thumb holds that you must put at least four pellets that retain about 4 foot-pounds of energy into a gobbler's head and neck for a clean kill. Delivering that much force should cause enough trauma to kill the turkey.
7 shot as the best shot size for turkey hunting. It is even prevalent in some areas to use the only No.
A good turkey choke needs to put the greatest amount of pellets directly into a target area about 20 inches in circumference. Most other choke tube systems -- like those designed for waterfowl or upland birds -- are made to put uniform shot patterns on a 30-inch or larger area.
Remember the distance to be used to pattern a shotgun; the accepted standard is 40 yards. However, some people would recommend 35 yards depending on you. But if you are a beginner, it's best to follow the standard.
Ported choke tubes are not designed to reduce muzzle jump or recoil. The holes go all the way around the tube so it is pushing down as much as it is pushing up. Supposedly, the purpose of the ported choke is to strip the wad from the shot charge which supposedly provides for a better pattern.
This is called “patterning your shotgun.” All shotgun hunters need to pattern their firearms to determine which brands of shells, shot sizes, and loads perform best and at what range. A shotgun may have a good pattern (high density of hits), but shoot off target.
A choke is the tapered constriction of a shotgun barrel's bore at the muzzle end. The purpose of a choke is to alter the distribution of the shot as it leaves the firearm. The various size chokes constrict the barrel thus tightening the spread of the shot.
