- 1/2 bar Castile soap, grated.
- 1/2 cup purified water.
- 1 teaspoon glycerin.
- 1/2 cup palm oil shortening.

- 10 drops sweet orange essential oil.
Does soap need a preservative? You never have to use preservatives in cold process or melt and pour projects. They have a pH level that doesn't allow mold or bacteria growth. Liquid soap doesn't need a preservative either, but you can add one to be extra careful or if you plan to sell it.

It can be tempting to add oils and butters to melt and pour soap base. I recommend 1/2 teaspoon per pound when adding honey to melt and pour soap base. Too much honey in melt and pour will cause the soap to become soft, increase glycerin dew, or the honey may separate from the base.

The short answer is no. Melt and pour soap is NOT cheating as long as you do not claim it is something other than melt and pour (often called “glycerin” soap).
Or, if you're living back in the stone age like I am, and don't have a microwave, a double boiler on the stove top works just fine. Put a bit of water into a saucepan and place a heat safe bowl on top. Bring the water to a low simmer and the steam below the bowl will gently melt the soap base.
Because melt and pour soap contains extra glycerin, it is prone to glycerin dew/sweating. This means some swirls that can be made with cold process soap are not possible with melt and pour. Melt and pour soap can burn if it becomes too hot. Once burned, the base becomes thick, gloopy and difficult to work with.
Colorants. People often mix powdered colorants to some oil to avoid chunks later, adding it to the soap base. When you add too much colorant, you are also adding more oil. This results in the soap becoming softer and greasier.
ONE: Chop 15 ounces of Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base into small, uniform pieces. Place them in a small heat-safe container along with a chunk of the Perfect Red Color Block. I don't recommend adding lemon juice to a melt and pour soap. The base can only accept so much liquid, especially, non-oil types. Lemon essential oil is best. Zest as I've used in this recipe is also fine, as it is mostly solid with some oils in the rind.

Melt and pour:
- Mix 1 teaspoon of pigment with 1 tablespoon of glycerin or 99% isopropyl alcohol. Add ¼ teaspoon of dispersed color to the melted soap until you get a color you like.

To store your soap, whether it's melt and pour or another form of handmade soap, place it in a cool (not cold), DRY location out of direct sunlight. A linen cupboard or shelf works well.
