Police directly cant retrieve the WhatsApp messages easily as WhatsApp having end to end encryptions, but below are the widely adopted method by police and forensic department if they have physical access to your mobile phone. WhatsApp doesn't decrypt or share the message contents as of Jan 2020.
In
Android: Tap on “Archived

The difference between clearing and delete chats in WhatsApp is only deleting whole chats list on the main screen of the app or emptying them all. When you clear chats in the app, you will only delete conversations which you made. However your chat windows will not be deleted.
To delete your backups:
- Launch your File Manager.
