When “Displays have separate Spaces” is checked, each display will have its own grid of spaces, and they operate independently. You can set up each grid separately in Layout preferences by selecting the display. When you activate the overview grid, each monitor will display its own grid.
The option “Displays have separate Spaces” applies to Macs with multiple monitors. By default switching desktops on one display will also switch the other, but with this option checked each display will have it own set of desktops.
To switch between virtual desktops, open the Task View pane and click on the desktop you want to switch to. You can also quickly switch desktops without going into the Task View pane by using the keyboard shortcuts Windows Key + Ctrl + Left Arrow and Windows Key + Ctrl + Right Arrow.
You can't rearrange or rename spaces, either: You get Desktop 1, Desktop 2, and so on, and that's it. And, unlike earlier iterations of Spaces, you can't arrange your desktops into a two-dimensional grid; you get that horizontal array only. (Hence the sideways-swipes you use to navigate from one space to another.)
Using virtual desktop in Windows 10 allows you to expand your desktop beyond the physical limitations of the space, organize groups of related tasks, and easily switch between them.
Multiple desktops is just a way to run several desktops on a single monitor. Some people connect two or more monitors to their computer so that they can double the desktop real estate.
