To pay life is the same as losing life, and damage causes loss of life.
Anytime a player would pay life also counts as loss of life. Effects that set a players life total will trigger this ability as long as the new total is lower than the previous one. Similarily, when a player has their life total exchanged for with a lower total, this counts as loss of life.
If a creature has lifelink, any amount of damage it deals allows its controller to gain that much life. And that's any damage: combat and non-combat damage alike. So, if your creature with lifelink “fights” another creature outside of combat or deals damage via an activated ability, you'll still gain the life!
Platinum Emperion a mythic card from Scars of Mirrodin has an ability that prevents your life total from changing. Because of this, you cannot spend life to play cards with Phyrexian mana in their mana cost via their alternate costs.
Damage is caused as "a result of combat" (119.2a) or "as an effect of a spell or ability" (119.2b). Spells that cause loss of life do not cause damage.
You start with 20 life in a game of Magic. Your opponent's slew of spells and cavalcade of creatures will attempt to reduce your life total to rubble, knocking you closer and closer to 0, ticking down slowly from 20.
First strike allows creatures to destroy any attacker or blocker with toughness less than or equal to their power without taking any damage. That means they can survive combat with creatures with deathtouch, and they can destroy creatures with lifelink before they deal damage, preventing opponents from gaining life.
How do you play Commander in MTG? In Commander, each player starts with 40 life instead of 20. Your Commander sits in their own special zone and can be cast whenever you can afford them.
A Phyrexian mana symbol represents a cost that can be paid either with one mana of its color or by paying 2 life. Example: {W/P}{W/P} can be paid by spending {W}{W}, by spending {W} and paying 2 life, or by paying 4 life.
Lifelink is a keyword ability introduced in Future Sight. Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that source's controller to gain that much life.
Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, you and that player each gain that much life. At the beginning of your end step, if you have at least 15 life more than your starting life total, each player Angel of Destiny attacked this turn loses the game.
Vigilance is a keyword ability on creatures that allows the creature to attack without tapping.
Whenever you gain life, draw that many cards. Whenever you lose life, for each 1 life you lost, exile a permanent you control or a card from your hand or graveyard. When Lich's Mastery leaves the battlefield, you lose the game.
2016-07-13: Any toughness-modifying effects, counters, Auras, or Equipment will apply after its toughness is set to the player's former life total. After the exchange, Tree of Perdition would be a 2/9 creature (its toughness became 7, which was then modified by Cultist's Staff) and the player's life total would be 15.
