These updates run about $70 – $120 depending on the vendor and the type of map purchased. Garmin typically charges about $70 for a single update, Magellan about $80, and TomTom charges about $80 – $90 depending on the map technology. (These prices are for North America maps.)
You can download free map updates and purchased map updates from your myGarmin account. 1. Connect your device to your computer. To download a free update, from the Home tab, click order now, and go to step 4.

Steps to update Garmin maps for free via GPS Express software:

Note, however, that the 1340 LMT may have a larger file to download, so it may take longer. Sometimes (depending on internet connection speed, time of day) the process could be very long. (last Garmin European map update was 3 hour download!)
How to Fix a Garmin GPS
- Disconnect your Garmin GPS from its external power and completely turn it off.
- Flip the Garmin GPS antenna if your unit has one.
- Press the "Reset" button on the backside of the unit.

There is not a Garmin plugin for the Safari app on the iPad so it is not possible to download directly to a GPS from the iPad.
Garmin Express is a tool developed by the company Garmin to enable you to manage your Garmin GPS device from your computer. You can use this app to update your maps, register your device, update the software, and even to create backup copies.
Sync your device with the Garmin Connect app (Using the Garmin Connect App). When new software is available, the Garmin Connect app automatically sends the update to your device. The update is applied when you are not actively using the device. When the update is complete, your device restarts.
Launch the Garmin WebUpdater software. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm that you want to update the unit. The software will check for software updates to WebUpdater first and will install them automatically if it finds any. The Garmin GPS unit is now updated.
When purchasing a nuMaps Lifetime subscription through Garmin Express, the subscription will automatically be activated to the device. The updated maps can be installed immediately on Garmin Express after the purchase process. Devices that are preloaded with Lifetime maps do not need to be activated.
Updating the Software Using Garmin Express™
Before you can update your device software, you must have a Garmin Connect™ account, and you must download the Garmin Express application. Connect the device to your computer using the USB cable. When new software is available, Garmin Express sends it to your device.Standalone GPS navigation systems. Issues with Garmin Express are usually attributed to out-of-date software or poor communication with a connected device. To resolve most issues with Garmin Express: USB charging cables do not allow Express to communicate with the device. Restart the computer and try again.

Resale value: Factory navigation systems may improve a car's resale value but only for a short time. Updates: The maps on factory systems are typically as current as the vehicle's model year. If you want to update the maps, you need to purchase a memory card or, for an older vehicle, a DVD.
Updating using Wi-Fi®

As a general rule of thumb, it's a good idea to run an update your sat nav once every three to six months. Even if you don't travel far with your sat nav, it's still a good idea to update it as road layouts change quickly and you don't want to be adding time onto your journey for no reason.
