There are a few things that have to happen to move your number from one carrier to another (this is called a port), and the elapsed time may vary depending on how quickly your current provider processes the port. On average, ports take 7-10 days to complete; however, they can take up to 4 weeks in rare cases.

Overall, AT&T tends to be a little cheaper than Verizon when you compare pricing. However, it's important to compare overall value for money rather than just looking at your monthly cost. Both carriers offer additional perks (e.g., entertainment perks, mobile hotspot) which you should factor into your final decision.
Porting: Keeping Your Phone Number When You Change Providers. If you're switching service providers and remaining in the same geographic area, you can keep your existing phone number. This process – often referred to as phone number porting – can be done between wireline, IP and wireless providers.
AT&T has announced a new switching deal for prospective customers, offering to pay back your early termination and device payment charges if you make the jump to its postpaid plans. If you're a current customer on a Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile plan, you can claim up to $650 back for each line you port to AT&T.
AT&T will cover customers' ETF from their old carrier up to $350, or it will cover the remainder of an installment plan on the phone for up to $650. The trade-in value of the phone will be deducted from AT&T's payment, and the customer will get a promotional prepaid card for the balance.
Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon are now willing to pay your early termination fee or part of your remaining phone payment balance when you switch networks (check each provider's website for details). Before switching, it's always good to reread your current phone plan and compare it to your desired new plan.
Phone companies are required by law to port your number out when you start service with a new carrier. According to the FCC, a company can't refuse to port your number even if you have an outstanding balance or unpaid termination fees.
Verizon is offering four different free cell phones with a 24-month commitment on a new phone line:
- Apple iPhone 7.
- Samsung Galaxy A10e.
- Nokia 3 V.
- Motorola moto e6.
When considering switching over to another carrier from Verizon, note that: All 4G LTE Verizon phones come network unlocked. You should be able to use your 4G device on AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon devices may also work with the carrier's MVNOs, such as Straight Talk, Page Plus and Red Pocket.
