How to reduce size of WinSxS folder using Storage sense
- Open Settings.
- Click on System.
- Click on Storage.
- Under the "Local Disk" section, click the Temporary files item.
- Clear the default selection.
- Check the Windows Update Cleanup option.
- Click the Remove files option.
To compress a folder, do the following:
- right-click on the folder.
- select Properties.
- click on Advanced
- check the "Compress contents to save disk space" option.
- click OK twice.
You can move WinSXS. I have done it before, but it's not easy. The best way is to attach the SSD to another computer, and use that computer to establish the junctions. However, there is no reason to move the WinSXS folder.
Download, install and run PatchCleaner to delete orphaned files. Run Disk Cleanup (e.g. by typing "clean" in the Windows start screen and selecting "Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files"). Select the drive to be cleaned. Click on "Clean up system files" (and enter credentials if required).
WinSxS is a system folder in Windows. That's why it's located on the system partition. WinSxS stands for “Windows Side by Side,” which is a good description of the folder's purpose: different versions of files are stored together, side by side. The folder is also called the component store.
Simply open up the Disk Cleanup utility, click on Clean Up System Files and then check the Service Pack Backup Files box. Also, be sure to check Windows Update Cleanup and Previous Windows installations if those options are present. The latter one will reduce the size of the entire Windows folder significantly.
The Windows component store (C:Windowswinsxs) directory is used during servicing operations within Windows installations. Servicing operations include, but are not limited to, Windows Update, service pack, and hotfix installations.
Role deletion from disk (from WinSxS folder) is possible only via Powershell. Special command argument Uninstall-WindowsFeature –Remove should be used for this purpose. In our example, providing that only one file-server role was installed, the size of WinSxS folder will decrease from 8 to 5 Gb.
You can't just delete everything in the WinSxS folder, because some of those files are needed for Windows to run and update reliably. However, with Windows 7 and above you can use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to delete older versions of Windows updates you no longer need.
Here are some Windows files and folders (that are totally safe to remove) you should delete to save space on your computer or laptop.
- The Temp Folder.
- The Hibernation File.
- The Recycle Bin.
- Downloaded Program Files.
- The Windows Old Folder Files.
- Windows Update Folder.
Navigate to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution and open the folder. Press CTRL + A to select all files and folder, then press the Delete key. All the files in the SoftwareDistribution should be deleted.
The Windows Update Cleanup feature is designed to help you to regain valuable hard disk space by removing bits and pieces of old Windows updates that are no longer needed.
While it's safe to delete the Windows. old folder, if you remove its contents, you will no longer be able to use the recovery options to rollback to the previous version of Windows 10. If you delete the folder, and then you want to rollback, you'll need to perform a clean installation with the desire version.
Go to C:WINDOWSSoftwareDistributionDownload using Explorer or any third-party file browser. If you navigate to the folder manually, you may need to enable the showing of hidden files first.
Files that can be safely deleted from C drive:
- Temporary files.
- Download files.
- Browser's cache files.
- Old Windows log files.
- Windows upgrade files.
- Recycle Bin.
- Desktop files.
Delete windows update files manually (Windows 7 / 10)If you are using your system as a standard user, then open it as an administrator using the right-click menu. Once you are in this folder, open the “Download” folder, select all the files in it and just press the Delete key on your keyboard to delete all the files.
Free up drive space in Windows 10
- Open the Start menu and select Settings > System > Storage. Open Storage settings.
- Turn on Storage sense to have Windows delete unneccesary files automatically.
- To delete unnecessary files manually, select Change how we free up space automatically. Under Free up space now, select Clean now.
3 Answers. Don't ever manually delete anything in those folders. The second folder stores the Windows Installer files for installed applications, so that they are available if you (or the system) need to repair, modify or uninstall an application.
To start the Disk Cleanup tool, either run the Cleanmgr.exe command, or select Start, select Windows Administrative Tools, and then select Disk Cleanup. You can also run Disk Cleanup by using the cleanmgr Windows command and use command-line options to specify that Disk Cleanup cleans up certain files.
To start the Disk Cleanup tool and specify the hard disk to be cleaned by using the command line, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following command, and then press Enter: c:windowsSYSTEM32cleanmgr.exe /dDrive.

SysWOW64 is not a virus. It is a legitimate folder filled with system files, utilized to run 32-bit programs on Windows 64-bit version. However, we do not recommend removing this folder from the system because that's why you can run 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows version.
