The UK has now left the EU. The previous cap on the cost of calls and texts from the UK to EU and EEA countries no longer applies. Before you make a call or send a text to the EU or EEA countries, check the cost with your fixed-line or mobile operator.
Is it free to use my phone in Europe now? It is free to use your phone in European countries as if you were at home. You will still pay your normal monthly or pay as you go bill, but you won't be charged extra for using your minutes, texts and data when you're on holiday.
Calling or texting any country (even within our Europe Zone) from the UK, is classed as an international call or text, and will be charged at standard international rates. You can make calls to international mobiles and landlines from just 1p per minute with our International Bolt On.
Sending international text messages (SMS) while you are abroad can be very expensive. Many international text messaging apps and websites are free, meaning you won't have to use your roaming. Turn off your mobile provider data or put your phone on Airplane Mode when you leave your country.

It's possible to call anywhere in the world free. If you've a steady broadband connection, free internet phone calls can slash the cost of calling abroad - and you can even save if you're out and about on 3G or 4G. It sounds complicated, but making calls via the web is easy, especially if you've a smartphone.
With rates starting at $0.01 a minute on some carriers, you can get a great deal when you call France. To give you an idea on the difference, a one hour call to France on the cheapest rates will cost $0.01/min or $0.60/hour. On the most expensive rates you can see rates as high as $3.00/min or $180.00/hour!
Calling a French phone number from the UK
- Type 00 into your phone - this is the UK exit code. From a mobile phone, you can simply type "+".
- Next, add 33 - this is the code specific to France.
- End by typing the last 9 digits of the French phone number you are contacting, skipping the first digit which will be a zero.

How to make a call

- When prompted dial 00, then the country code (+33) and the number you wish to call.
At the moment it costs 26.1p per minute to phone a landline in France, 15p on evenings and weekends. From February 25 it will cost 40p at all times. This means a half hour chat on the weekend with a friend in France will cost an extra £7,50 unless you have a special phone plan or bundle in place.
